Glass on Table Tops and plastic seat covers

Is this a unique thing to Colombia? I remember seeing lots of glass on wooden dining and coffee tables with lace cloths sanwiched below the glass, or sometime just the wood. Was it just some of my relatives, or is it fairly common?

How about plastic seat covers in taxis?

I always thought the Italians were the kings and queens of this. I've also seen it in Portuguese homes, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, etc. and some Jewish homes for that matter.

And grandmothers!! What is it with old ladies and doilies?

LOL My aunts in Colombia are always "crocheting" these doilies and sending them over to me and my sister.

Another typical colombian household thing:

Right on the toilet tank in the washroom they keep a spare roll of toilet paper inside this little colorful knit "roll cover" that resembles a little hat. Sometimes it has little flowers knit in the front part of it. Has anybody seen this too or are my old aunties too damn creative?

In the UK they do the same sort of thing but instead of a hat they make it into a dress for a barbie style doll and cover the loo roll with that(The dolls legs going inside the tube)!
I've never known why, maybe the thought of leaving a toilet roll uncovered is disturbing or that it's a nice decoration for the bathroom!!

What’s with middle class Colombians and that ugly ass heavy dark Victorian wood furniture? WTF is that crap all bout? And what about no TV in the living room, if ever was a place for a TV, is smack in the middle of the living room, a 42 inch LCD attached to BOSE speakers would be perfect. My shit is strictly IKEA, I move, I leave all that crap behind except for my TV and stereo.

I'll get there, when I get there!

LOL I LIKE THAT HEAVY DARK VICTORIAN SHIT!!! - LOL . . . as far as the plastic, I asked my parents about it years ago and they told me that they thought it would help protect the furniture so it could last longer . . . I think it also has to do with our obsessiion that everything has to have a high-gloss finish otherwise its not clean - everything from the sofa to the plastic bull or elephant on the coffee-table - LOL . . . hell, I've seen it at the airport where the same plastic used for the furniture, was used for the suitcases too! . . .

ELMO - como le va . . . no, but my godfather and most of my aunts do and every Puerto Rican, Dominican and the occasional Cuban household I've ever been to does . . . I do dig the turn-of-the-century furniture though - that I'm guilty of - LOL . . . however we do have an affinity for vases and flower pots - go figure

Elmo you are spot on with that observation, just look at the family photos on my website. ja ja

As for me I am a modernist, which is a slight misnomer as many classic modern furniture that I have dates from the 1920s, or rather the originals do.

Why don't you just get inflatable furniture Elmo?

I have ridden many taxi's in Medellin and Bogota and have yet to encounter a plastic seat cover. Tiny ass taxis that I cannot fit my size 12 feet in or just too small for me to ride in the back seat are another matter.

After the second splat on the sidewalk exiting, I started having my wife wave off the micro taxi's. Generally, I try to ride in the front seat now...most drivers are accomodating.

kernow, to go with my collection of inflatable dolls.
Another piece of furniture that I saw in many middle class Colombian families was the cabinet with a bunch little ceramic figures, plates, and cups that no one ever used. When my mother worked as maid for a family in barranquilla they had that cabinet and many times you find my dirty face pressed on the glass plate looking inside, trying to figure out what the fuck that’s all about and if I steal a cup will they miss it? I was tire of drinking and eating off my “ “tutuma” that’s a wayuu name for a plant or root with a hard shell that we later cut in half remove the stinking middle to use as a plate or cup.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Tutuma, that's my new word for today. In the UK we used to use coconut shells. ;-)

Hey Elmo perhaps you could tie the dolls into some spiffy new furniture, I reckon a few knotted together could make a nice sofa.

Add the Polish to that List Where I was born and raised in Erie, Pa. in the old Polish Neighborhood, the livingroom was off limit until Sunday afternoon-all the seats had plastic covers and the table had a synthetic type of cover also. Yes-no TV-nothing that would encourage one to hang around and mess up the Decor. Always reminded me of a Funeral Home!

no plastic in the living room (last time i checked, at least).
and we always get proper tablecloths matching the season, so right now its something with flowers. they r linen or cotton, i wouldnt know. the tv stand also has a tablecloth matching the other one. my mum is very peculiar about it, she would not have a plastic thing in the room ever, its bad taste and no class.
even in my room i get a tablecloth and i have lift up my pc to change the thing.
thou in the kitchen, she's got a plastic one on the table, i reckon coz its easier to clean when u r preparing the food.
