Gift for host.

Hi All!

I am coming to visit Medellin for the first time and I would like to bring a gift for my host and hostess. Can anyone recommend a good gift to bring from the States? I was told that the best coffee beans are exported from Colombia and good quality coffee is not available there. Would it be an insult to bring gourmet coffee or would it be welcomed. I really want to make a good impression so please help me out.

Taking coal to Newcastle IF you know your host will appreciate it, I would only take super premium coffee like Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain. Colombians can get pretty decent coffee at Oma, Juan Valdez and a number of other independent cafes that cater to middle class and above Colombians.

Almonds... Almonds were a big hit with everyone; I took a box of freezer baggies, and a large pack of almonds and another large container of choc-covered raisings (from Costco).
Once there, I packed a bunch of bags with a combo of almonds and raisings, and it surely seemed to hit the spot with everyone, until my lady "confiscated" the almonds for herself.

Maple Syrup? I would really like to also know if good maple syrup would be appreciated- and how they would use it. My colombian friends here LOVE maple syrup (only the good, pure stuff, but only on pancakes.
I agree on the Salmon- It was a big hit when I went. Just make sure they eat fish- everyone doesn't.

What do yo know about them? It's better to ask them, or try to buy something not for the price, but for the value. How well do you know them? because something that can be "exotic" to some people, can be disgusting to others.
I agree with adrimn, bring something to make them know, that you think about them; for the hostess I'll bring a nice pure silk scarf or/and a good perfume. And for the host a very good bottle of wine, and some fine chocolates. But you know them better, and if the are simple people try to bring them something that doesn't make them feel uncomfortable. Do not show to much, do not show to little.
Have a great trip.

it all depends .... Perfumes are so much more expensive there....

For the Hostess, she would love ( any woman) a set of Lotion, Body Spray, Shower Gel from Victoria's Secret. It ususally comes in a little purse she can use as well.. here you may pay about $25.00 ..there this would cost about $50.00 if found!

For him ...not sure... since I am not a man... but Good Pens for business man or a nice portfolio would be nice.

Do they have any kids? ( If they do they will appreciate more gifts for them than themselves)

gifts I will be in Bogota on August 16th. I have been told that pistacios and peanut butter are very expensive in Bogota so I am bringing some with me. I am also bringing some learning toys for children (English). I like the idea of the fish and never thought about it. I will be sure to buy some as my novia loves fish.

DVD player I recommend a DVD Player, you might get a great deal at a walmart, or cordless phone as mentioned above. Victoria secret is also a hit, I agree with that.
