Sorry for so many questions at once but I'd like to have these questions answered before I leave so I don't have to think about it when I'm down there. Thanks for all the great answers!!
First, I'm going to be staying in Santa Marta for awhile and I'm kind of a gym rat (2 to 3 hours a day 6 days a week) Last time I was there I couldn't find a gym. People told me there was one in Rodadero but I didn't see it. I'd actually prefer one in the old city if possible. So, does anyone know of a gym in Santa Marta and possibly the cost?
Secondly, When I travel to a country I usually like to have a good history book on the country because it brings the country more alive to me. Any recommendations for a good Colombia history book in English?
Thanks

SamGompers says on Dec 4, 2007, 05:32: What exactly is it that you do in a gym for 2 - 3 hours, 6 days a week? Speaking as an ex-gymrat, sometimes the best thing you can do for your body is to get out of the gym.

esanch36 says on Dec 4, 2007, 07:26: you shouldnt work out any longer than 2 hours at the most..even though most people say 1 and half... All right, I'll ask: How come it took three seconds to euthanize Eight Belles, but the Womens NBA is starting Year 12??? |

Adanimal says on Dec 4, 2007, 07:44: I go to the gym for my body and mind. It keeps me balanced and lucid. I do weights for 60 minutes to 90 minutes and cardio for and hour to 90 minutes or so and sometimes I work on my martial arts a little. Unfortunately I have a slow metabolism and I like to eat but I don't like being fat. So really I have little option. I'm only 40% man the rest is animal:). I feel better when I'm not here. The Midwest is a sad boring place if you ask me. I like to tear though life but I was unfortunate enough to be born and raised here. My step brother has been staying with me and all that dude does is watch movies all the time. Of course he's out of shape (and he's only 19!). What's sad is that he is more the rule than the exception out here:( I'd rather experience life that watch it though a TV screen. When I see his big DVD collection it just makes me sad to think of all the time spent sitting in front of the boob-tube. How many times can you watch the same movie anyway? I understand music but Movies? Silly. You don't know your there until your there! |

Adanimal says on Dec 4, 2007, 07:50: I'm so glad you guys are worried about my work out schedule. To be honest I jacked my left shoulder up a little so it's slowing me down a bit but I can't stop. Have you ever seen during the olympics? Those athletes train way longer than I do and I'd say they're ok. I'm a big boy I can handle it. Thanks for the concern though. Any word on that gym in Santa Marta let me know. You don't know your there until your there! |

SamGompers says on Dec 4, 2007, 08:34: If you're weightlifting, you really shouldn't do more than 1 hour of heavy iron 3 or 4 times a week. For maximum development, the most important things are good diet and, especially, rest. I do worry about young athletes who overtrain - - and seriously risk injury. If you're doing an hour of cardio every day, six days a week, more power to you. These days I try to vary my cardio - - between gym, pool, and most importantly walking and running. You'll expend a lot of calories exploring Santa Marta/Parque Tayrona. Even more if you decide to trek into the Ciudad Perdida.

Adanimal says on Dec 4, 2007, 08:41: Thanks SG..That's in the old city right, or is it Rodadero? Also do you know the cost per month per chance, or have a guess anyway? You don't know your there until your there! |

Adanimal says on Dec 4, 2007, 09:10: Yeah I like the idea of running. It's beautiful there...but as you stated..the cars and buses..yikes! Also if you didn't notice..ITS CRAZY HOT IN SANTA MARTA!!! I would be insane to run in that. I"m a northern midwesterner and I can't run the summers here even. I make it a mile and I'm toast in the heat and humidity. I guess if I got up before dawn....Maybe. I'm not that commited though. I'm not one of those Kenyan guys who always wins marathons. Those dudes amaze me. I saw footage of them training in the Sarangetti. Why does everyone else even bother running when those guys always win? You don't know your there until your there! |
