Getting Dual Residency In Colombia via Spouse

Due to extreme costs of medical procedures in the U.S., my wife and I are moving to Colombia soon. We are planning on living in Colombia for at least 2 years before we will be able to go back to the U.S.

We would love to here back from any of you that have any information on getting residency through your wife or husband in Colombia:

1.) Besides getting my birth certificate, and our marraige certificate legalized at the Colombian Consulate in Miami, do we need anything else?

2.) Will I be able to get my visa extended easily once we start the residency process in Colombia?

3.) Any one have any luck with GOOD immigration lawyers in Bogota?

Start with the... or a consulate in the USA and apply for a spouse visa good for two years and can be renewed). Good for multiple entries as long as you are not out of Colombia for more than 90 calander days at a time.

After three years with this visa you can apply through MRE in Bogotá to become a Qualified Resident (like the US "Green Card") and it never expires.

Does anyone know the turn around time to get a spouse visa at a Colombian Consulate in the U.S., or in Bogota?

Trying to plan my trip to Colombia in just 1-2 monhts.

Thanks!

Appointment at Miami Embassy for Spouse Visa Colombian Spouse Visa:
-------------------------

Well I am happy to say that on April 27th we got our appointment with the Embassy's Visa officer for May 11th. There is currently about a 2 week back log at the Colombian Embassy for Marriage visas.

The great news is that the visa is issued within 1 day, and it is good for 2 years.

Register your marriage:
------------------------
We have to first register our marraige with the embassy before you can go to your spouse visa appointment. This is a process which involves standing in line for several hours. You can only register your marraige from 8:30am to 12 noon. Get to the ebmassy before it opens at 8am if you want to be first!

1) Colombiana/o Sedula
2) Colombiano Birth Certificate
3) Marraige Cert (from us)
4) Previous Divorce Record (if you have them)
5) Copy of US passport & bring your real passport
6) Plan to spend all morning

Congradulations!!!!!!!!!! Not really that had if you pay attention to what they want, dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" Renew in two years-no problem-after three years apply for permanant residency in Colombia again no problem. Even though you plan to return to the USA I would work my time schedule so I could end up with the Colombian "green card."

BTW it's not the embassy in Miami it's the consulate.

Anyway enjoy Colombia and where are you going to settle.
