General Aviation in Colombia

Is there much general aviation activity in Colombia? I'm thinking specifically piston singles and VFR flying. I'm sure there's a little business jet and piston twin activity going on but is it possible for an average person to fly around in a 172 or Cherokee? Do flying clubs/FBOs exist there? Does Colombia recognize U.S. pilot licenses?

I don't see much air traffic here in Valle de Cauca. I think that the skies may be tighly regulated.

You can fly into the country in any plane you want, you just have to have all the proper documents in order, FAA pilots certificate, file a proper flight plan etc.etc....there are FBOs in most major airports, and some at the smaller fields.....I am looking into building a Berkut, varieze, or a nice lancair and flying it in and out of the country.....there is a descent general aviation scene in the larger cities of Colombia...

I'd be looking more to rent a plane and/or join a flying club once I got to Colombia. Although flying all the way down there from the USA would be an incredible adventure! Might be a fun way to celebrate getting my instrument rating if I ever achieve that goal... But yeah in the meantime I was thinking how accessible renting planes within Colombia would be with a US issued private license. And if I could rent one would I actually be able to fly it anywhere without being forced down by the Fuerza Aerea!!!

I haven't seen much air traffic over the Valle de Aburra either. The occasional RJ or Twin Otter type airliner going out of OEH airport but I don't remember seeing anything smaller than that flying around.

This group flies to all parts of Central America. I helped the owner with trip planning while living in Panama. I'm a retired corporate pilot living here in Medellin and still interested in aviation. It gets in your blood....

This group might be willing to answer some of your questions if you decide to fly to Colombia. One of their last trips was to Panama City via Central America.

Apparently the group now has flights to South America, but Colombia isn't mentioned.
