Future visit to Medellin

Has anyone recently visited Medellin and has any comments? I lived in Medellin for a couple of years during the 80's and am returning with my child who was born there. I want him to see the country and city where he was born and to visit his father. I am filled with excitment but also some concerns traveling to a country I have not seen in years. I remember Colombia as a beautiful country with friendly people, can't wait to have my child eat an arepa con queso, not made by myself.

Becoming very modern and Americanized...City is growing rapidly along with the nightlife...The people have not changed and are very friendly compared to other big cities in Colombia.. Narcos and Drugs are not as prevelant as back in the 80's speaking for Medellin.

Poblado is completely built up and in the 80"s was under construction the beginning...

Medellin still has traditional Colombian ethics..

Needed to rephrase..

The Big Rock you are referring to is El Penol, it is 702 steps but the views are marvelous from the top. You would think you are in Europe as you
see beautiful lakes and homes! Their are some very nice towns on the way including an area that has Waterfalls. You can stop and get some great pictures or have a drink or lunch.

Many people go to Guatape to go boating, water skiing, or jet skiing. It has become very popular and has lots of restaurants and bars and you can take a boat to some of them.

Here is some information to assist on your trip to El Penol and Guatape.

Anyone know anything about a large medical complex called Clinica de las Americas in Medellin?

It is a modern hospital in front of La Mota. What would you like to know?

Robi--I made a post a few days asking about this Clinic but NO one replied so I assumed Nobody knew of it. A Friend of mine here in Miami(peruana) is thinking about going there for reconstructive Breast Surgery due a bout of Cancer she went thru last year. She had a radical Masectomy and someone had referred her to this Clinic. I see its also advertised in a Colombia Business Journal circulated in Miami. They have a Miami Rep and I called her and she explained their operation. It seems like good avenue for someone out of country wanting surgery (plastic, dental, orthopedics ect)as they have many specialties and the Miami Rep is not a part of one of these Medical Travel Vacation Agencies popping up all over the place these days, jacking the Price of Surgery up double or more. They have some nice amenities at this clinic, like Airport Pickup and Follow up Medical care Post op in your home or Hotel. These are NO cost and does not affect the price of Surgery if you use them or not. I haven't talked to anyone yet who had actual surgery at this place and that is what I am looking for, someone who went there who could comment on their experience. The Rep in Miami is going to talk to Miami area Patients who would be willing to share their experiences with us. This could well be a place of Interest for PBH Posters who frequently ask Questions about where to go for Plastic Surgery as well as other types(surgery) as they offer everything at this Clinic-i.e. cosmetic dental, Optical ect and its reassuring to know the surgery is being performed at Bonafide CLinic with Support staff on hand if an Emergency arises. Patinets can put themselves in a Great risk when they have surgery performed in some Doctor's Office small clinic without Support staff should emergencies arise. Robi, any comments on this Clinic would be appreciated,,,

yo, chloe....
oh boy! another estranjero who was in medellin in the 80's.....where you been. i go way back and can remember poblado with dirt streets...

oh has it changed. my kids were born there too. wow has it changed. no more shootemup killum. pablo's gone, the bombings are gone (except for an occassional elec tower) and the shootings are out of fashion. no more shootings in your favorite disco/restaurant/bank. you wont believe oviedo. pablo's office building in front of oviedo is still there, abandoned, funky. sure glad i didn't buy one of those office condos. i have inlaws in envigado and most of my good friends are up-country in llano grande. i don't do the city much any more. it's too safe, too civil and too touristy for my taste. sure, i have friends in and around medallo, but lets face it, after you see what they did to parke lleras, you'll know what i'm talking about. one good point...don't forget this one...la casa de los cinco puertos is still there. no body that visits lleras ever goes there so that tells me who's visiting medellin. tourist trap suckers. (excuse me guys, but unfortunately it's the truth) sorry. there's too much real colombia to get stuck in holes like the 'body shop' (barf) i mean, if you're gonna go to colombia, see colombia....si o no

chloe...e me at dwmte7 at yahoo.com and we'll exchange notes.

I am currently living in Medellin. I however, live in a suburb not right in the city. It is the burbs of Medellin that are wonderful to see and experience. The culture is ripe there. No bloody McDonald's. I lived in Bogota for 8 months last year and for me, Medellin is like night and day compared to Bogota. You can sit outside here any morning and have a coffee and and watch the world go by. Medellin and it's burbs have the best climate in the world. Better than Guatalajara (sp), Mexico which is also called the city of "Eternal Spring." Problem is everything here seems to be changing at an alarming rate. High rises are popping up all over the place. Metro is expanding. Exitos etc. are expanding. Prices are rising.
