Futbol

I hate soccer. Viscerally. The game itself bores me utterly. I heartily despise the synthetic emotions of the fans. And all the razzamatazz about its celebrity players makes me despair for humanity. The whole bloody game is half business racket, half mental illness.

I'm not alone in this. A very sizeable minority of British men (usually blue collar) loath association football/soccer too. 'Beautiful Game'? My arse!

But in Colombia, I've yet to meet a man who wasn't besotted with the sport. When my brothers-in-law periodically ask me which team I support and I express the above opinions, you can see them mentally denying the evidence of my being married to their sister and questioning my sexuality.

Every kid in my wife's village knows far more about Manchester bloody United than I ever will. The men often appear to think of nothing else. And I'm yet to find an exception to this unwholesome obsession.

Are any men of this stalwart Latin race free from this daft secular religion?

IT'S THE CULTURE and you can't change it. If you go to the jungle and hang out with lions, what do you think their reaction would be if you told them you were a vegetarian? Here's another example: I don't drink hard liquor and when I go to Colombia we go out to clubs and I order Bretaña (club soda), they look at me like I'm from another planet, I accept it, I don't fight it. I see this like it's part of the culture. If everybody liked the same thing, this world would be boring.

yeah I think it's a pretty boring game myself but you risk your life here admitting that. I do confess to liking the odd downhill ski race or Canada vs Russia hockey game. But that's like once every 7 years.

I'm all for watching a deciding game between your own country and whoever, and getting some entertainment/enjoyment from that, but the futbol season here never seems to end and people take it as a life or death matter.

You should hear the heathens here yell when someone scores a goal, they insist on going out on their balconies to be sure everyone within 5 km knows they are winners.

I think it's just weird.

But I figure it keeps them from getting into other trouble, so that's probably a very good thing.

I find sports on TV boring Strangely enough, the only sports I actually enjoy on on TV is tennis and Formula 1.

When it comes to American Football, Basketball, Futbol Soccer, etc, I find them dreadfully boring on TV. However, there is something about being at a live sporting event that makes it much more exciting. I love going to basketball games(especially when I get free tickets). Even though, I am not a big soccer fan, I really enjoyed seeing the World Cup games in Dallas way back when. Baseball is another story. That is a game that is boring even when you are playing. Blech!

My 2 cents,

"I heartily despise the synthetic emotions of the fans."

I don't think that the emotions are synthetic per se, at least as emotions go, quite frankly any emotion for something non-human could therefore potentially be classified as being synthetic.

I understand your point of view completely though, I just apply it to sports like American Football and Curling.

yep, different strokes for different blokes. I would chance to say if you don't enjoy watching it and have no appreciation for the sport, then likely you
never played it, or you
tried it once and realized your immediate frustration, and gave it up. No problem.

I can't bear to watch it on TV, unless maybe the world cup, nor to watch it in person, at a lower skill level, unless of course, your (my) kid was playing, or so.

? As to why you're so concerned whether I'm gay or not, I'm at a loss to understand. But if you're really that interested, reading my OP may shed some incidental light on my sexual preferences...
