Furniture and carpenters in Medellin

About to move into a new unfurnished apartment and am in need of all the furniture... Bed, fridge, tables, chairs, couch etc... and I have a few questions.

Does anyone have any furniture that they are trying to get rid of?

Can anyone direct me to the cheapest places to buy?

Does anyone know where I can find carpenters that could make furniture on the cheap? One problem with my new place is that two of the rooms, even though they have seperate entrances, are seperated by a big archway. A carpenter might be able to make me some sort of cheap screen to seperate the rooms.

Thanks!

However, a lot of foreigners come to Colombia and have no intention of learning the language, making Colombian friends etc. Instead they congregate in one area and flash their cash about..."

Back slumming on the Gringo site? Is it our cologne? I'd have thought you would have assimilated by now, ya know, integrating, experiencing the culture. But yet you're here talking English with a load of North Americans, Australians, Europeans etc...

The Colombian friend thing's not working out all that well?

if you want furniture, 'tipo colombiano, rustico' you can find a lot in caldas, south end of medellin past envigado and sabaneta. take a taxi. for miles along the road are ebanistas (carpenters) and you can see their wares and many can make your designs.

if you go up the hill to el retiro, as you're driving into the pueblo towards the park, there's a lot of ebanistas there, as well. on the back side of rionegro next to san antonio, is another place where the ebanistas show their wares.

for electro domesticos, go to envigado on the street below the park heading back down to oriental (ave. poblado) there are some there. i could ask my family about more,

i used to mfg furniture in colombia, had 12 workshops from bello to rio negro and know the situation pretty well. pm me and i can help you out with particulars. also, do the google search above and you'll find many posts i've made on teh subject.

you can pm me and i'll answer what questions i can. my wife is calling home this a.m. and i'll ask my father where to go for the appliances. (electro domesticos).

glassoman....que pena...we just called the house in envigado and don ricardo--father--was not in the house. if you know where the minorista is in envigado, on the street on the back side--farthest from el parke, there are some places there. ask around and they'll point you in the right direction.

Ave Oriental right by the bend on 57, Argentina has some inexpensive furniture stores. There's a handful all in a row on La 80, Belen area. Buy your Haceb fridge at Exito.

I know the area dwmte is talking about. There are some fantastic views from the hills where these places are located. If you look hard enough you will even find a store with antique stuff in it. Don't buy your fridge second hand. They are pretty cheap there and not worth taking a chance on a fridge that could break down easily. MHO.

Glassoman,

Check out Rusticos El Artesano. They are a factory (with showroom) in Sabaneta. They custom built all the furniture for my 3 bedroom apartment in April, 2008. Delivered on time, and returned to make adjustments/corrections. I am pleased with the high quality and low price. Juan is the owner.

you're lucky byron you could pull the rabbit outta the hat with ease. all the names of our workshops are packed deeply in stuff that hasn't been opened for years. when we move back permanently, i'd love to visit your friend, as colombian furniture is in my bones.
