Furnishing an apartment in Cartagena?

I'm getting closer to buying an apartment in Cartagena. One of the questions I have is how I will go about furnishing it? I'll need everything, beds, sofa, dining room, TV, refrigerator, lamps, lines, dishes, towels etc.
What is the best way to accomplish this? Just head to Exito with credit card in hand?

RAAAY,
You're probably right, it's going to be a rental most of the time in the first few years anyway, so I'd probably want something more suited for that type of use.

Home Centre is your best bet to get most everything on your list. It has a small furniture selection, but what it has is acceptable. For more furniture selections, I would say the small shops on San Martin in Bocagrande across from Blockbuster can have some options. Also, there are quite a few furniture stores near the Convention Center in El Centro.

Overall, the furniture in Cartagena comes two ways: expensive and boring or cheap and downright ugly. I just don't like the styling that seems to be popular. I don't know if its just what the people want or if its just what the stores offer them and they have no choice; but its an interior designers' worst nightmare. The expensive stuff generally looks like something my grandmother might buy and the cheap stuff looks like ....cheap.

My recommendation for furniture, if you want something nice, is Bogota or Medellin and have it trucked to Cartagena. But, don't give the stores more than a nominal payment until the furniture actually arrives in Cartagena.

Medoblado is right about getting a good mattress. Three good mattress stores in Bocagrande; one across from the Navy Base, another on San Martin not too far from Frisby , but on the other side of the street (but this one is quite expensive), and the third on Malecon, across from the beach near the Hotel Caribe.

Thanks for the good info. I do agree most of the mattresses I've slept on in Cartagena were pretty sad, no support whatsoever. And once I had to pull the "spare bed" out from under the main bed for an unexpected guest. The mattress was so thin it was non existent, it was like laying directly on the wood slats...

I was in Home Center an hour ago. It is superb. Better than Home Depot and way better service. Good prices. It is a great place for all kind of construction and house stuff. For furniture it may not be the best place. Jamar in Pie De Popa has descent stuff that wont cost you a fortune.
Also right next to Home Center is Carefor which is a great grocery store and also has electronics and things for the house. Good Luck.

A decent bedroom set.........bed, two bedside tables and a dresser.............around 6mil...

But who wants a box spring? Give me a good Danish bed with slats, and a good hard mattress. But surely someone in Colombia makes that as well, no?

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

RAAAY says on Feb 11, 2008, 15:23:

Whatever about the slats.........you'll have no problem getting a hard mattress here.....
