Furnished vs. Unfurnished

Hi, I'm moving to Cartagena at the end of the month where I will be for at least two years. How big of a price difference is it to rent a furnished vs. unfurnished one bedroom apt.? Would it be worth it to spend money on furniture if I'm only going to stay two years? How easy or hard would it be to sell used furniture? Is $1000 enough to get me started with a bed, couch, dining table, etc? Also, I've heard that apartments in the Centro have no cable internet access. Is that true? Thanks for your help!

Google on this site as there was a poster who had a furnished apartment in the walled city about 2 weeks ago....it looked nice, but i need my AC, which it wasnt...that poster could probably help out immensely...and send you photos of the place. i have an office in the walled city and i have broadband internet access through Telcom, but it only took a month and a half to have it installed....

Just my opinion...

What do unfurnished apts. come with? Do they at least come with a fridge and stove, and perhaps AC even?

Everything or Nothing If you are planning to stay two years or more, definitely buy. Try to sell everything in one packahe to the owner of whereever you decide to live or call me when you do, I rent furnished apartments.

If I were you, I'll probably try to find an appartment closer to beach, the city center can be expensive. Try plaza de sandiego close to El Vivero.

You won't find partially furbished, they'll charge you as if it was completely furbished.

Appartments Cartagina There are lots of furnished appartments in Boca Grande but you will pay dearly for them as it is a Vacation area most, are rented for the week in season. You would be much beter off renting in a strata 3 or 4 area. I have 3 bed 2 bath dinning room kitchen that costs me $145.00 a month utilities run an other $50.00 including cable. You will have to buy every thing including refrigerator and stove but costs are resonable Give me a call I may be able to help you find a place Cell #315-815-6119 Boatygringo

DonGringo is Corrent and in addition to IMHO I think the amount you will pay is much different for a furnished apartment verses an unfurnished apartment. But is it a bargain? From my experience, 99.9% all the apartemnts rented by Colombians to Colombians are unfurnished. You will find some bargains renting these if you do not mind going through the hassle. And, from all accounts renting an apartment for the most part in Colombia is a nightmare.

Quite often you will be able to rent a furnished apartment without all the hassle. The reason for this I believe is, the people renting a furnished apartment are more compfortable renting to gringos. And, what follows is the cost for this is much higher. I believe the two examples above is why there is a difference in the costs of apartments. Lastly, a furnished apartment often comes with cable and if your lucky a high speed internet connection. If your are renting an unfurnished apartment and want these services prepare to Pay for the entire year in installments. You "have" to take the service for an entire year. In addition, when you furnish your apartment don't think you can just go out and by second hand furniture to furnish it. Unlike Canada and the USA second hand furniture shops and ads in the daily newspaper for furniture for sale are just not there. In short, it is not easy to furnish an apartment for cheap! As mentioned by DonGringo, short stay = furnished, long stay = unfurnishe. But there are other factors you may also want to consider.

Boatygringo... and others, thanks for your suggestions. I didn't realize unfurnished means completely bare, so that definitely changes my perspective. Boatygringo, I am still in the states, but if you can keep your eye out for me (furnished or unfurnished) I will give you a call once I arrive in Cartagena the first week of August. I've tried contacting several agencies I've found online but so far I've only one response and she said it would be difficult to find a furnished rental for such a long period. So maybe it is better to rent unfurnished...
