Colombians mark independence day with demands for hostage releases

BOGOTA, Colombia: Well over a million Colombians, clad in white and cheering "No more kidnapping," marked their independence day on Sunday with marches and concerts demanding freedom for hostages still held by leftist rebels.
Demonstrators chanted "freedom" in rallies across the Andean nation and in some 40 cities abroad including Paris, London, Miami, Beijing, Sydney and New York.

Carlos Vives, great as always but those damn sking tight jeans were DREADFUL!!!!

ColombianoGringo says on Jul 21, 2008, 10:11:

Oh Monpi relax man. Honestly, I thought the concert sounded pretty bad, but I attributed it to technical difficulties. Carlos Vives didn't sound too good either and he normally sounds great. It seemed like he couldn't hear himself. What can you do? I'm sure that putting on a huge concert in the Amazon is not the easiest feat.

Monpirri says on Jul 21, 2008, 10:48:

CG the thread it's about two Colombian musicians who are joined by two presidents from South America, in Leticia, Amazonas, COLOMBIA RE: Colombian Peace!.
Why do we have to spend More time in criticizing the body weight, color of the hair or hairdo, the clothes he or she worn or the way they walked, I do not know but all these superficial complaints sound just the way elementary kids behave!

By the way, don’t get me wrong because I do also criticize or do physical evaluations of other human being but when I’m part of fashion show or beauty contest, either when in a capacity of a judge or just as spectator who does have nothing better to do.

ColombianoGringo says on Jul 21, 2008, 10:57:

Oh please. It's just a concert. Honestly, they both sounded bad. Shakira's ballad that I heard sounded horrible as most of her whiny ballads do. I much prefer her "movidas". Carlos Vives is one of my all time favorite artists and I admire him greatly, but he didn't sound good yesterday. It happens. Not everyone can be perfect every time.

Sorry if I don't buy into all the "historic event" media hype. I'm all for peace in Colombia, but this concert won't bring real results any more than any of the countless "benefit" concerts around the world that are staged for everything from "saving the Earth" to "freeing Tibet". It's not like Cano is sitting in his hideout listening to this concert and that he will be so moved that he will just up and release the hostages and turn himself in.

Pardon me for being cynical about these types of events, but I work in the music and concert industry and have been around long enough to know that these types of events are nothing more than feel good circle jerks that don't actually accomplish much.

Having said that, I think it's great that they held the concert and that the presidents spoke, but let's keep a little perspective.

Monpirri says on Jul 21, 2008, 11:13:

ColombianoGringo says on Jul 21, 2008, 11:20:

My point is that this concert and its participants are not sacred cows that can't be commented about in jest. My first thought when I saw the concert yesterday is that Carlos Vives looked like Rosie O'Donnell. I though it was funny, so I posted it. They are nothing more than entertainers. I don't see why you're getting worked up about it.

Mononoke28 says on Jul 21, 2008, 13:15:

I don't share your taste in music. So just because you love Shakira, I'm supposed to say "oh my goshhhhhhhhhhh she was so amazing! she was lovely, I looooooooooooooove her, she's the best thing that's come out of Colombia since arepa con morcilla."

Whatever dude. The girl stinks as a singer, just because she composes catchy tunes does not make her a good singer for one. She still sings like a sheep with colic.

I also said I'm glad she was in Leticia. That's as far as my compliments go for that lady.
