Great way to see the country I agree with you!

From Cali, you can chose one of the following routes:

1. Cheapest: via Santa Marta
Cali-Honda; Honda-Santa Marta; Santa Marta-Maicao; Maicao-Maracaibo

2. Via Medellin:
Cali-Medellin-Cartagena-Barranquilla-Santa Marta and as above.
Stop off as desired.

3. Via Bogota:
Cali-Bogota; Bogota-Santa Marta and as above.

If you don't want to wait for the bus to Santa Marta, since there are lots more buses going to Bogota-Barranquilla, purchase your ticket to Cienaga, and then it's a short ride to Santa Marta.

There are express buses from Barranquilla to Maracaibo, with no stops and they are somewhat more expensive.

Make sure you have your documents, visas and personal belongings well organized in order to cross the border into Venezuela, the border post officals have a reputaion for being exceptionally nasty.

Any more questions? I myself much prefer to travel by bus than plane, it's much cheaper, and much more interesting, with zero hassle, while air travel in Colombia can cause stress.

I made the trip Santa Marta- Maracaibo myself in 1997, it's the chaepest way from Colombia to Miami, flying one way out of Maracaibo.
