It is safe to take the bus, and an interesting, if a bit longish ride.

The bus is perfectly safe. I did it on an overnight bus and I'm as gringo as they come. Although having said that I think it's about the worst way to travel. I don't think there is a single straight stretch of road so be prepared to rock side to side for 8 to 10 hours. Depending on how fast the driver drives. I made it to medellin in about 8 hours and was white nuckle tight in my seat for about 6 of those hours. It's like a rollercoaster!

By Colombian standards, a relatively easy ride. But you're riding through the Andes so it'll be mountainous. At night it is dreadful. Much better to go by day, see the countryside, stop for a good typical lunch by the roadside, get a glimpse of towns and small cities, etc.

Two thoughts here, many people travel by night to sleep, I can't sleep on night busses despite the comfort, videos, air conditioning ( sometimes to cold especially in the mountains ) I prefer to get on with it and take in the spectacular views, la verdad impresionante, it's not the destination it's the journey. Oh yea a little amusing observation, have you seen the charts ( stats ) behind the glamorous ( or not ) girls who take the money and give the tickets explaining how many injuries or deaths thier company has inflicted on la gente " this month" ha they all seem to read the same, nada, good touch though. Any way bolivariano is the best for me, poquito caro but worh it. Also don't sit next to kids stuffing thier faces with sweets ( candy) , just in case take a handfull of plastic bags, otherwise it's a great adventure travelling by day, don't forget your camera, it's not everyday you can take pictures of the top of clouds while watching a shoot them up kung fu film

Expreso Bolivariano, Flota Magadelina, Espreso Brasilia and others make the trip. Figure about 10 hours and one way will be right around 46.000 pesos. Take one of the big buses like Brasila's Gaviota for the best ride and comfort. This route, Bogotá to Medellin is probably the busiest in Colombia and safe-go during daylight to see the country.

BTW Brasilia also goes from Medellin to Cartagena for about 90.000 pesos and time wise at least 14 hours. Buses leave from the Bogotá terminal

Yes it is safe and it is not that long compared to going to Cali from bogota or any coastal cities from Bogota.

Smile if you are a thinker!
