Friend Was Robbed In Belen Last Night

Walking home from La 80 around 9pm, a 20-something female friend was mugged by 2 guys on motorcycle. They took her cash (100 mil), her cell phone and all her legal documents. The police were patrolling the area around the same time, and these guys cruise around robbing constantly, with impunity.

"I didn't see any mention of this being reported to the police....."

No, you didn't see any mention of this being reported... So what? Are you keeping statistics? And how is it relevant to the news of the crime whether I mention it being reported or not? Yes, the crime was reported immediately. This type of crime occurs frequently in that area of Belen. Reporting 'may' help direct some increased public safety attention towards the area.

You are reading too much into things if you found me to say "the police just let it happen". Impunity is the failure to bring people to justice (as in after a crime has been committed.) It has nothing to do with intentionally allowing a crime to occur.

Have you considered finding a hobby in life???

Azu's comment is well justifiable.
We have read posts where the incidents were not reported.
The thefts carried out by motorcyclists have been a common occurance here for a long time and my wife warned me about that on our first trip in 2000.
We foreigners and Colombians must be on our guards and remain aware of what is going on around us all of the time.
Distractions on the street like making/answering mobile calls make us more prone to let our guards down.
Sorry to hear about this story and I hope your friend is not too shaken up by it all; I take it she came to no physical harm.

It's true PCL, most non-foreigner muggings don't get mentioned. (This was a Colombian young woman.) The more sensational crimes get the news coverage, such as the story of the ex-cops turned narcos being found in a bullet-ridden car above Envigado recently.

Based on this year's crime wave and gang wars, Medellin will definitely be moving up in the list of the world's most dangerous cities, after having dropped several places. Most likely, it will return to the top 5.

Wait and see whether the recently added forces will make a difference. Yesterday I saw a MP standing guard in front of a casino, instead of any one of the 7 nearby banks.

You know what, a single female walking around at 9 pm, which is after hours in Colombia is going to be a target.

She should have used 4k of that 100k to take a cab.

I sometimes go to a little bar to swill a couple of cold ones that is exactly 8 blocks from my house. And one of the blocks gets shady after 8 pm, because the hoods know people have money in my neck of the woods.

I will peek out the bar and if I see characters milling around in the streets, i will call and cab and save myself some grief.

theflatline, I agree it is the wrong time to be walking alone. She was advised to avoid that area at night. But it is hard to get through to young independent minded women. A not so street savvy gringo was mugged in the same spot last year. Like your neighborhood, this area has its shady spot too.

It wouldnt have happened if she had taken the 88lb puppy with her.... I usually get the food but i am in Fla for a few days.....

I never had problems Colombia for the most part.

Had a tyranny grab stuff out of my shirt pocket on the way home on night.

They would hang around a corner just one block from my place. A week later a guy was driving bay that location and said something to them that they didn't like. They threw a brick into his windshield. He got out and approached them. The knifed and beat him to death. That area was cleaned up quickly as it was in high estrada district. But those trannies ruled that area for long time. They all went into hiding as the man that was murdered by them owned a bar in the area had many friends who wanted vengeance in a big way. The thing is in my opinion you can never relax totally in Colombia. You always have your eyes wide open. Just my opinion.

I am now living in the Philippines. Same here. People are desperate. If you wander into the wrong area at night on dark streets there is a high probablity that you will get robbed. But I don't hear about guys on motor bikes scooting around robbing people in broad day light.

there's one thing one folks learn the longer they live in colombia. they finally end up knowing someone who does dirty work. a sicario if you will. if they don't know them directly, they know someone, who knows someone. it's the way things are dealt with in colombia. with some respect for the police, they just don't get anything done.....outside of the pay as you play plan. they just do what they get paid to do--under the table--and very little more. on the other hand, if you need or want guaranteed results, you usually end up going to the pros.

i got to witness this first hand when my brother (in law) was killed by some punks (sicarios?) four of them came to the house and gunned him down. now nothing happens in the neighborhood that the neighbors don't have the answers to. ever.
my suegro hired men to take them out one at a time; which they did. the police you ask? they did absolutely nothing, i don't even think they wrote up the report. but my father dealt with it. and i might add, cheaply. one by one the guilty were taken out, with a BANG.

i often want to caution folks here on pbh about insulting folks (each other) their wives/mothers/families, because, especially colombians take that shit way personally and WILL have you popped.....with a smile. i've witnessed it.

add to that, especially in these tough economic times, you can have someone 'dispatched' quite cheaply. you pay your sicario 60% up front and the balance on delivery, you have the job done in 24 hrs. and for a $50.00 bill you can have it done and if you're a good bargainer, get some change back. so you guys be careful out there the way you talk about people, and again, especially the colombians, take that loose lips shit real seriously and will kill you with a smile. don't forget that. know that reality and keep it in the back of your mind as you live your lives there.

if you write something about your experiance with sicarios, so please write when this was. Most of the readers don`t know that your comment is a history from nearly 20 years ago. There were changes now. I`m living now 13 years in Colombia and i don`t know any sicario and I`m sure my friends either.

as for your observation, martin.....you're lucky. my rich finca owner friends, ganaderos,et al and some industrialists i know, just use paras. but at the bottom line, it's all the same. a henchman by any other name is still a henchman. oh! (at this level john) you're right, inflation has taken it's toll. paras cost more. it's the mtn dwellers in bello and thereabouts that work dirt cheap.

There is a street corner in Manizales that is run by some vicious trannies, and they have run it for 20 years. The police leave them alone as long as they do not venture into el centro to far.

you're right martin....what you're saying and trying to convey is true. there's change and improvement just about everywhere. the streets are cleaner, and in the areas south of gobernation, it's cleaned up and basically safe. but the farther you go north and east, it's tragedy. that's where the hope and help needs to penetrate. the last mayor was a marvel, he did it, and spent money on the have nots and hopeless..those without voices, the ones who are hungry. but since he left office, basically nothing in those regions.

who ever is in charge now, the alcalde, concentrates more on the vote base and concentrates there. so once again, the natives are restless. and yes, once again life has become very cheap, because hopelessness has risen and hunger has spread.

thanks cowboy.

Makopp5, I personally know a guy who recently hired sicarios. He had 3 guys whacked. The whacked had it coming. They were real scum and had murdered somebody themselves. There was no justice using the legal system, so justice was then served at a very personal level. The hits were in Bogota, all within the last 2 years. I have no idea what the price was - I didn't want to ask.
