If you have 60% of the miles needed to get a flight, you can buy the remainder of the miles. This may not be news to FF vets, but it was to me.
I booked MIA-CTG leaving in Oct. and returning in May for US$210. The normal price for that trip is around US$1300 because it is over 6 months. I had 18,000 miles and had to buy 12,000.
Interestingly, I checked that flight on Orbitz. The direct flights were $1300. However, if you booked one direct flight and had one stop in Bogota or Cali or Medellin for the other leg, the price was $500. In the future, I'll stop in MDE for $800.
On another note, Avianca refused to refund any money to me. See my thread, "Screwed by Avianca - again." They did offer me a credit, however.
