French Airbus Gets $2.9 Billion Avianca Contract for New Planes

PARIS (AFP) - European aircraft manufacturer Airbus got two pieces of good news on Wednesday as the Gulf state of Qatar signed a commitment to buy 80 of its A350 aircraft and Colombia's Avianca ordered 38 medium and long-haul jets---Brazilian German Efromovich, the main shareholder in Colombia's biggest carrier, said here the sale was executed on 38 jets, and another three were leased, for a combined total of 2.9 billion dollars.

Avianca also took options on another 32 Airbus aircraft, Efromovich said.

Delivery of the jets was to start in mid 2008, he added.

miamimike Presently its mostly a Franco/German company, with a small percentage holding by Spain, although the free floating shares are held by many Countries, including quite a large stake by Russia.

The British part owned by BAe sold out last year.

Its manufacting facilities are mostly in Germany, France and England, with some in Spain and soon to be China.

The biggest single cost of any aircraft is the engines which on most aircraft you have an option of 2 or 3 suppliers, presently I think only one aircraft of the Airbus range is restricted to a German/French built engine.

The remaining engines are normally built by RR of the UK, or GE of the US.

About time !!!! The long-haul A350 is being designed to compete with the 787 Dreamliner manufactured by US rival Boeing. But while the 787 is expected to enter service in 2008, the fuel-efficient A350 will not be ready until 2013.

I'd suggest you do a better job quoting your links.

Bloomberg

Airbus has sealed only 13 firm purchase contracts compared with 567 for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, which will be available in 2008, five years ahead of the Airbus model.

Boeing has been beating the pants off Airbus.

AIRBUS is part of another one of those multinationals. For those with nothing better to do, I'd suggest a protest because the parent company makes,, OH MY GOD,, military "stuff".

Those folks need to start beating their weapons into plows and get with the PBH idea of nirvana. Lots of folks know how to “beat, I only hope there is a supply of things to beat.

Hummm, latest talk is that China will be selling passenger jets in 10 years or less. Couldn't be better timing.

PS: If the TOTAL 2006 Plan Colombia buget was spent on new Boeing 777-300ERs they would receive TWO jetliners and have some money left over for spare parts.

According to one poster, the multinationals get it all anyway. Humm, I wonder if they could be converted to crop dusters?

Yet more bad news for Airbus: now the company's biggest customers are reportedly calling for it to rethink its design for the A350. If the company is forced back to the drawing board again it would mean further delays and even higher costs.

"Cayita my thoughts exactly"

I don'tsee why this is a big deal for either of you unless you are a boeing stockholder or employee. Also in the real world it always prudent to diversify. If Colombia or Colombian companies only do business with the U.S. government or US companies then that would put Colombia's sovereignty MORE into the hands of the US. Uribe is not doing Colombia any justice by only concentrating in a trade agreementwith the US instead of putting that much effort into trade agreements with Latin america, the EU, and Asian countries. If you think this is silly then how do you figure that the US has trade agreements multiple nations not just one or two, because it s thebest for the economy.

Tinto "If there is so much opposition to the spraying program and it hasn't met the stated objectives, the Colombian government should just say NO! Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela have all reduced, threatened to reduce, or put limits, e.g. no spraying, on their anti-narcotics cooperation with the U.S."

It sure as heck should.

Unfortunately, the risk seems to be that it would make us "persona non grata" in the eyes of the U.S. government, Congress and part of its population, because we're the largest supplier of the relevant poisons and thus apparently held to a "higher standard" as far as "doing something (that the U.S. wants us to do)" is concerned.

In other words, a bunch of Colombian politicians aren't willing to risk the proportionally higher reprisals that would come with such a move, as long as the U.S. position isn't ready for it. Others, of course, are genuinely convinced that "fumigations are the right thing" and so on. A few would, however, effectively try to change things in the way you have described.

In any event, the larger problem is still Prohibition, IMHO, and nobody has really had the balls to stand up against that, whether in Colombia or in the rest of the region.

Need a protest with naked women Poco, the US multinationals, defense contractors, and Monsanto

Looked at the internet and sure enough MONSANTO sold approx. 25 Million dollars worth of the horrible stuff called ROUNDUP (you know, that stuff you put on you lawn weeds) to Colombia.

Can’t believe the correct number from a bunch of ranters say but what the heck that is good enough. 25 Million Dollars !!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOSH.
Monsantos Total Sales: 69,353,000,000 (That’s 69 Billion)

WoW;

.00036047467304947154412930947471631 Percent of Total sales for Plan Colombia.

Ridiculous, yes it is. I’d say this is a sale the size of a pimple on someones ass,, but it’s NOT THAT BIG.

Monsanto is an Agricultural Company and employs approximately 17,000 people around the world.

Pay attention !!!!

This would be Monsanto employees and does NOT include the Thousands of contractors working in all phases of their business including marketing, engineering, operations, financial, attorneys, planners, plant and manufacturing, operations, truck drivers etc.

You know,,, people who don’t smoke dope, eat beans and fart. I’d suggest that one major problem with the unmarketable ability to eat beans and fart is that farting with your ass aimed down wind and inhaling the vapors seems to have an adverse effect on ones thinking.

Regardless of what a small number of clueless individuals say, Monsanto is doing just fine,, actually better than fine. 450 % increase since October 2000.

Don’t like it,, tough. China, Europe, Russia, you name the country and it will be made if Monsanto doesn’t. Who cares if a few hundred folks at Monsanto get laid off anyway?

I’d bet they get early retirement and go to work somewhere else making the same chemicals for more money.

What happens to the guys cleaning the toilets and sweeping the floors? Who knows but I’d bet their new employment won’t be better, that is IF they are employed.

Rule No. 1. When the clueless dork with a system they DO NOT understand the result will be that the poor suffer the most.

I've looked at some sales numbers. China has bought an almost equal number of planes from both companies.

I'd suspect Qatar has the same thinking, not good for anyone to have one company with a monopoly and someone has to even up the playing field.

I like the Chinese,, hard working and smart. Not so sure about Qatar, I think they just have money.

all I can say is since Plan Colombia and the training, equiping and the support of Colombian soldiers things are safer in Colombia for us. There is always someone around it seems to throw water on anything good the US does. It is US money so I fail to see the problem with using US companies to produce the goods for Colombia. I guess if Colombia could produce them themselves then they wouldn't need help from the US now would they? The spraying is probably a bad idea but that is not all of Plan Colombia. To me it takes a real genius to look a gift horse in the mouth.
