Freed Colombian Hostage Sees Son

Some nice news to brighten the mood!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7186460.stm

I haven't seen Colombia headline the main BBC website this much ever. This hostage release is a big deal. Or maybe nothing else is happening in the world.

That poor boy. What a tough start in life. I hope he and Clara Rojas are able to make a really good mother-son bond and lead a terrific life after all they've been through.

I don't know the first thing about medicine, but it seems a minor miracle that a 40 year-old woman survived a "kitchen knife C-section" (as it was described in one of the press accounts) in the middle of the jungle.

Mr. Hollywood says on Jan 14, 2008, 12:09:

I get the feeling that was a bit of an exaggeration about the kitchen knife.

The FARC has better knives than that. And better all-around medical care.

Nothing you would wish on your own loved ones but I'm sure they have scalpels and can create a sterile operating area.

Desi1 (Moderator) says on Jan 14, 2008, 12:16:

The Cesarean was performed by Farc people with only 2-year medical training. I suppose they had the antibiotics and sterilisation equipment necessary; I understand that the operation in itself is not very complicated. Anyway, they're both lucky to have survived in such primitive circumstances.

I was watching the video of Clara and Emmanuel's meeting. The child obviously seems to be confused; she's calling him "Emmanuel", while the name he's been called has been Juan David (?). The boy is too young to have any memories of her and it'll be some time before he can start showing any affection for her mother or the rest of the family.

Sam Salmon says on Jan 14, 2008, 13:02:

It'll be a while but he'll adapt.

I note that Doña Clara is there-as she's said her life is now complete.

' a la orden!'

Mr. Hollywood says on Jan 14, 2008, 14:18:

I've been witness to a couple cesareans. Not brain surgery, for sure, but it would be really easy for things to go badly awry. Desi is right that they're both lucky to have survived.
