Things I Miss About Colombia # 9: Fotografias.

Allow me to explain for those of you thinking "Dude, fotografias is just Spanish for photos, don't you have photos in England?".

I've noticed in a lot of Colombian homes, not just of my family but people I've visited, the fotografias. A work desk or a vanity unity will have it's surface covered in a montage of photographs, which in turn is covered by a protective plane of glass. The desk is still used as it normally would be, but it's fun to see this montage of people and memories staring up at you from beneath your stuff. I guess it's a way of keeping those you love close to you.

This is a framed montage hanging on my sisters wall but writing about it, has tempted me to consider making a desk montage of my own.

They don't do that in England? Me pregunto por que no?

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I've no idea why. It's why I notice it so much in Colombia, it's another quality of "otherness" than from my normal life.

Colombian Restaurants in London PanosL1, there are two main Colombian restaurants which i would recomend, both are in South London.

La bodeguita is in Elephant & Castle shopping centre, there is also quiete a number of other Colombian businesses, travel agencies, cafe's, hairdressers and a shop where you can purchase colombian Products.

Personally i woul not recomend spending too much time there, the area is terrible, depressing and the "desechables" that hang around there can make it all too depressing.

The other restaurant is La Mazorca which is in Brixton, 5min walk from the station. This is a great spot on Friday and Saturday nights, as it clears some tables, offers a decent dancefloor and puts on good music til 3am.

Regarding Fotografias.. I agree that it is definetly one of the things which bring a smile to me back home, going through all the fotographs packed into one cuadro.

I too may start one for my work desk..good idea!

Yeah I've eaten at La Bodeguita and it wasn't an enjoyable experience, but as Gabsi says, Elephant & Castle and the down along the Old Kent Road towards Burgess Park is the best place to find the Colombian (And Ecuadorian/Brazilian not to mention African and Polish!) communities.

There is an annual Latin American Festival in Burgess Park in the summer which is always fun.

North London alternative La Piragua
176 Upper Street, Islington
London N1
Tel: 020 7354-2843

I ate there some time ago so I'm not sure its still in existence, but Upper Street is a much nicer area than Elephant & Castle.
