Vampire From Placerville Dies In Bolivia
Tristan Jay Amero Earlier Convicted Of Bombings
LA PAZ, Bolivia -- A convicted hotel bomber and former Placerville resident who modeled himself on a fictional vampire has died after becoming ill in a prison in Bolivia, officials said.
Tristan Jay Amero, 26, was serving a 30-year sentence for bombing two low-rent hotels in the Bolivian capital of La Paz in 2006. Two Bolivians died in one of the attacks.
A senior official in the national prison service reports Amero complained of stomach pains Monday night in his cell and was taken to a hospital where he died. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed.
Amero adopted the name of Lestat Claudius de Orleans y Montevideo, a variation on a character in Anne Rice's vampire novels.
Also convicted in the bombings was Amero's Uruguayan girlfriend, Alda Ribeiro Costa.
Amero's case briefly caused a bizarre kink in Bolivian-U.S. relations when President Evo Morales referred to him as a terrorist.
U.S. court documents show Amero received psychiatric treatment off and on since age 7, spent years at a juvenile detention center and often made threats of suicide and violence against authorities.

He was smiling like nothing had happened. Pretty sickening. Diana |

jonas says on Apr 3, 2008, 09:53: The guy had been in and out of psychiatric institutions since he was 7 years old. So we are not talking about someone who "simply" tried to fuck things up but someone with a serious health problem. The guy was literally insane. When they arrested him in La Paz he first asked for a psychiatric evaluation and to have medical records from the US sent to Bolivian authorities. But when he learned that this would result in getting locked up for the 30 years at a psychiatric hospital he was smart not to do it and the US authorities actually then declined to send those files to La Paz in order to prevent him from going from jail to the real hell. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |

Mr. Hollywood says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:16: Jonas is right that the CYA (California kiddie pen) had a notorious reputation as a training ground for later loonies. Basically Attica for teenagers. Combine that early experience with some serious mental issues and you get this kind of loon.

Mr. Hollywood says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:17: One question for those with more energy for pursuing those things. He was asking about certain bombings in Colombia. Small bombs placed on buses, etc. At the time I believe he was in Colombia. Has anyone tried to establish if he was the one behind those?
jonas says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:22: Interesting point there Mr. Hollywood. It certainly crossed my mind, too. But I doubt it was him (for no specific reason). There were 2 small bombs on an empty bus that injured the driver but there was also a bomb in a Cartagena hotel bathroom that did not injure anyone. I guess that bomb at the hotel set off his idea with his later bombings of the hotels. He stayed in hotels for a very extended period of time, too, so he might have developed some feelings against them. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |
jonas says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:23: But you never know, maybe it was him and he was curious to what the damage was caused by the bombs since he obviously could not understand what was said on the news. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |
Mr. Hollywood says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:31: Or else he was trying to call attention to his actions. Kind of the same way arsonists often report their own fires or revisit the scene.
jonas says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:41: I guess one way to investigate could be to see if he posted on any websites (there are quite a few blogs and such where he used to be pretty active, the kid left one hell of a trace) between the dates of May 25th 2004 and May 27th 2004 and trace the IP addresses where he posted from to see if he was in Cartagena and Bogota at the time. Then check where he posted his question about the bombings from. What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |
jonas says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:45: On a second guess... the guy had recently (I believe we do not know when exactly) arrived from Panama, crossing the Darien. That would most likely have taken him through Cartagena... hmmmm What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been |
