Foreign Nationals

Hi all,

I am from Ireland and have been living in Bogota for 3 weeks now. I was wondering what the demographic is on this board? Indeed, am I the only Irish person in this city!

Thinking that a sure fire way of seeing of there were more of us here, I went to the Irish bar in zona T on St. Patrick's Day and not another paddy in sight!!!

The following day, there was an article in el tiempo saying there are 22k foreigners in Bogota, half of them Spanish, 2k from Venezuela and Ecuador respectively, 1800 form the United States, 700 italians and french, 400 germans... "as well as people from Czech Republic, Finland, Austria etc." a not one mention of Ireland. Am I really the only Irish person here (apart from my son!)... if so can I get an Honarary Consulate job?! :)

not really there are plenty other irish living here, but their favorite spot isnt for sure the "pub" at the zona rosa, they certainly prefer doing their saint patricks celebrations in a differnet way.

Try going to the british council maybe they can give you some hint on where to meet.

maraca, normally when abroad I would avoid "Irish" pubs, but I thought that might be a good place to start... I guess I was mistaken. I will give the British Consulate a try, thanks for the suggestion.

lfflorez, I have arrived here to work in Bogota and am with my wife and 2 month old baby, so while a trip to Cali might be on the agenda, I do not think a hostel would be so comfortable :)

I went to a pub in Bogota with an Irish mate, one of those saloon bar types with a long mirror along the wall.

We sat down at a table and began sipping on our pints when all of a sudden my mate says to me, "God, that bloke over at that table is the spitting image of you!" I had a look and sure enough he did resemble me. I says "By God you're right and the other fella looks a bit like you."

"They must be Irish lads", says he, "lets go over and buy them a pint". So up we gets. Then he quickly pushes me back down in my chair and says, "Sit down I think they're coming over to buy us a pint!"

heheh that was a sad joke!! :(

Paul, not the british consulate but the BRITISH COUNCIL. Just in case you misunderstood me: Calle 87 No 12-79 (very close to the zona rosa) tel 6180118/6103077.

In La Candelaria, on the same street of the "panaderia francesa", there is a very well known restaurant named El Cafe de Buenos Aires. The owner is a girl from Argentina and she is married to an Irish guy. MAybe you can head there for a very delicious lunch, in a really beautiful place, and you may get some tips from him, of course, if you find him there.

Have a nice day

Two men were sitting next to each other at a pub in Bogota.

After a while, one guy looks at the other and says, "I can't help but think, from listening to you, that you're from Ireland."

The other guy responds proudly, "Yes, that I am!"

The first guy says, "So am I! And where about from Ireland might you be?"

The other guy answers, "I'm from Dublin, I am."

The first guy responds, "Sure and begora, and so am I! And what street did you live on in Dublin?"

The other guy says, "A lovely little area it was, I lived on McCleary Street in the old central part of town."

The first guy says, "Faith & it's a small world, so did I! And to what school would you have been going?"

"Saint Marys" says he.

The first guy gets really excited, and says, "And so did I. Tell me, what year did you graduate?"

The other guy answers, "Well, now, I graduated in 1964."

The first guy exclaims, "The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same pub tonight. Can you believe it, I graduated from St. Marys in 1964 my own self."

About this time, another guy walks into the pub, sits down, and orders a beer. The publican walks over shaking his head & mutters..."It's going to be a long night tonight, the Murphy twins are drunk again."
