For the ladies: Did you have to change how you dressed, when you arrived in the United States?

I know I really need to qualify this question, so here it goes:

I noticed in Cali, Colombia the women wear very tight hip-hugger jeans and tight blouses. In addition, when it comes to the pool, many like to wear thong bikinis. Now, I realize this is normal for Colombia, and God knows, the women in Colombia can pull this look off, but in the United States, where people are more conservative on dress, might see these kind of clothes as a bit unflattering.

Did you notice this when you came to the United States, and change the way you dress or did you say, "Hell with it!" and continue to dress the way you have always dressed, eventhough, you will probably get many stares and unheard comments for wearing something like a thong bikini, poolside.

Just curious, because my wife will soon be here, and I dont know if I should advise her to be more conservative with her dress or let her dress they way she wants with the possiblity of her hearing any bad comments from individuals.

I know, people in the United States need to relax more and accept the way people are, but this is the reality in the here and now.

My wife actually dressed more conservatively in Bogota than here in Florida. Here in Central Florida you can be arrested for wearing a thong bikini! Miami isn't quite so prudish.

It's scary here! I live in Miami, and let me tell you, I wish many people WOULD dress more conservatively.

Of course I have no idea if those wearing the clothes are colombian, american or any other nationality.....but all too often you will see moms very obviously in competiton with their teenage daughters.

brazilian jeans....belly shirts..cleavage central.....belly rolls hanging out.

and we guys are no better sometimes either..but usually just fat and sloppily dressed.

it's all pretty comical....but you can find a diverse range of styles just depending on where you are in the city.

malls, south beach and coconut gorve are obvious hot spots for pushing the envelopes of decency....

the outlying areas and workplaces are fairly tame in comparison.

ok, guys, In Cali, girls are use to dressed that way , mostly in Colombia this kind of things happen in hot weather cities!! i'm from Cartagena! but i moved to Bogota about 6 years ago , people in Bogota dressed more conservatively because of the weather!!! so when i moved of course i had to change the way i dressed! Anyway Cartagena and Cali are hot weather cities!! and the smallest the clothes the more comfortable u'll be!! now i live in NY, and u guys there's no diference between Cali and Cartagena!! actually Cali and Cartagena's girls dressed conservatively!! this summer was really hot around here!! so just imagine!!
so i guess it depends where in this country u live.
i usually do something my mom always says " A donde fueres has lo que vieres", it means something like, do what the rest of the people where u are do!!! i guess in that way u won't hear any bad comments from individuals.

Well, tell her about it Tell her that where you live people may say bad comments about her way to dress...

If the posibility of those coments make her feel unconfortable she will decide on dressing more conservately, but if she doesnt care then she will probably keep dressing as she wants (except for the cold seasons).

I didnt have any problems with the clothing because I wasnt too "showy" in Colombia anyway... the only thing is that people is a lot more casual than I am here so sometimes in places I look a little more dressed up than the rest... but I dont reallly care so I continue to dress how I want.

Oh one thing about clothing here vs Colombia is that in my home we never used driers, we always hung the cloths in the sun so they would get dry... here everyone uses dryers and they make the clothes smaller... I was lucky that my clothes were a little bigger so it wasnt big deal for me but you should warn her so she doesnt have that problem with her clothes.

NOTHING TOO REVEALING!!! I came to the USA three years ago and I brought beautiful clothes from Colombia. One day I decided to wear one of those see through blouses (very famous in Colombia) of course I was wearing a bra under my blouse and you barely could see my bra. My friend ( A Mexican girl) told me that people here in California was not “used” to see that kind of clothes….I was shocked…..However, I asked my husband and he told me he did not care about my clothes as long as I was comfortable. I do not want to copy the fashion of the USA so I just wear whatever I want to wear…. of course, NOTHING TOO REVEALING!!!
