For the foodies ..where to get different foods

How about we try and get a list of places that have different foods .......

Example Best choices from Bogota have a range of asian spices ....Thai green curry by Mae Ploy ......( Best choice Ltda ..Bogota and a list of sellers around the country )

San Andresito in Rodadero usually has some differnt things like Satay sauce..Lea and Peririns..

Angostura bitters ...Some english tea ....

Does anybody know of other places in Colombia that have imported foods ???

Carrefour sucks.
Given up obtaining anything out of the ordinary here, either too expensive or unavailable. Also, Colombians generally are very conservative in their tastes. Well overdue for UK holiday and I try to bring at least half a suitcase of unavailables or hard-to-obtain things like Indian spices, Marmite, decent tea bags, black peppercorns, a few cans of Brit beer among a host of goodies.
thanks Kat for reminding me about the ale! Do you drink it because my wife LOVES the stuff?

Casa Lis Carrera 7 con 16 probably has the best selection of spices in bogie.
I am in Chile at the moment, they have real Lea and Perrins from the UK, not the HFCS variety from the USA, they also have HP sauce. If anyone wants small quantities of anything in Bogie then I will consider bringing things back.

Kat1,

The only arepa I do not like is the little white round cold ones you get at chicken places, the ones that come in the basket with your silverware.

Kat, you are being cruel now! Marmite picture and you admit to not taking advantage of all those wonderful Brit beers!
Actually, I am surprised that you like Marmite and dislike real ale. Marmite is a by-product of the brewing process.
In the UK, it is OK for ladies to drink beer, even among the upper classes!
The best arepas are those integral ones with 6 grains; they actually have a flavour and one can make toasted cheese (not quesito) tomato and onion toasted sandwiches with them. The white arepas are tolerable only if they are toasted on a proper charcoal bbq.

Calle 9 a block from Parque Poblado there's a shop with authentic Thai curry, and good noodles, and a lot of good spices It's got oriental in the name but can't rmember all of it. Easy to spot, though. Sorry if this is your spot Azunoman, but my theory is that they might go out of business if we don't send them some.

Hi Pie, I checked that one (as in the Marmite) and I will survive until my next UK trip thanks! Can I choose something else of equivalent weight and volume instead? Hahaha!
By the way Pie, what is the baggage allowance for your trip via Madrid? It used to be 2 suitcases of about twenty-odd pounds plus handbaggage of 10? I like to plan ahead and to see how much of the goodies department I can bring back from the UK.

does anyone know what the connections are like at bogota.. is it quite straightforward changing flights there?

0 funny, 0 helpful.

dwmte7 says on Sep 12, 2009, 16:06:

your first time, bogota (el dorado) will be a frustrating trip. but in time, after a few tries, you get used to it. you have to change airports (terminals) which adds to the confusion. but if you follow the crowd and the info, you'll be ok. if you land in bogota just ask any avianca person what you're suppposed to do.

it's a confusing situation but with any luck, you'll survive and get to medellin a little frazzled but no worse for the wear. once in medellin, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because all that hustle and bustle is behind you. you won't be going down into medellin proper, but to porvenir, so you have a piece of cake. just tell one of the taxis you want rionegro/porvenir, and you're 15 minutes from home.

have you heard anything back from the lady? i hope gloria, maria t. and margarita will be helpful. margarita will bend over backwards, maria t. can be a bit offish, and gloria ( i really like gloria) will be surprised as hell. keep all those numbers with you and if you get lost or misplaced just call margarita. she'll save the day.

be sure and give all of them my warmest regards.

Super-duper!
The more filters the better, they will be used. At least they weigh next-to-nothing! Papers are obtainable here and I know where.
Do not try to carry a lighter. Confiscation material. Cheap here anyway. Bring a box of swan matches as they do not take those away if they are on your person-or they did not anyway. Just in case there is an opportunity to puff at Madrid or certainly when you reach the outside of Rio Negro, as your novia will not have a lighter by the sounds of it!
I know Azu is after some sort of curry sauce-probably located on the "fish and chips" post!

Also, I would take Kat's advice and check up with your baggage allowance. You could always bring one half-empty as you could fill it whilst you are here with some coffee and other goodies.
