For the Digital Elite only - perhaps

For 99% of you reading this post - please avert your eyes now.
A smart, new Apple store opened today in San Fernanda Plaza (near Oviedo). It's called iStore.
It does not sell Chevrolet type computers (the type running on DOS leaf spring suspension), but rather the Audi of beautifully crafted, reliable, expensive digital devices (phones, music players and ... Computers).

(You at the back of the class - stop foaming at the mouth and calm down)

If you are already a convert, or if you are simply considering apostasy, it is definitely worth a visit. As well as the usual salespeople, they have what they called 'Apple Genius', people who should in theory be able to explain and show you how to do specific things like switching from Windows to Apple.

Finally, if you look at even the cheapest Mac with lust in your eyes, but despair at the relatively high price (the Mac Mini at 1.5 million), I have a used one for sale for 800,000 pesos. As I made my living in London for many years from 'converting' the heathen to Macs, I can help with the process of moving your files from your PC, and showing you how to use it. I live only 5 minutes from the iStore.

And yes, Apple is an elitist, expensive, arrogant, quality design obsessed company. But they make the world a more interesting place.

And if that hasn't upset you enough, then do NOT read the story of the Microsoft and Apple engineers on the train .....

Three Apple engineers and three Microsoft engineers are travelling by train to a conference. At the station, the three Microsoft engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple engineers buy only a single ticket. "How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft engineer. "Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple engineer.

They all board the train. The Microsoft engineers take their respective seats but all three Apple engineers cram into a rest room and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the rest room door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The Microsoft engineers saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the Microsoft engineers decide to copy the Apple engineers (as they always do) on the return trip and save some money.

When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the Apple engineers don't buy a ticket at all. "How are you going to travel without a ticket?" asks one perplexed Microsoft engineer. "Watch and you'll see," answers an Apple engineer. When they board the train the three Microsoft engineers cram into a rest room and the three Apple engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the Apple engineers leaves his rest room and walks over to the rest room where the Microsoft employees are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please..."

I love macs - but I love linux more.
No other operating system allows the freedom - as in libre, and gratis - as linux allows me.

I don't have to pay twice as much for the same hardware as I do with a mac.
I don't have to be restricted by DRM, closed software updates, pay for upgrades, deal with licenses.
I can set up my computer exactly the way I want it in a few minutes, with all the additional software I need. With both mac and windows I have to take hours or days.
I can run my windows apps.
I have open office - and Microsoft office running.
All my engineering tools - cad - simulators - compilers - etc. Are there for me.
It runs on anything - from my old pc - to my old mac - something not even OSX can do.
I never have to install drivers - everything just works :)
I can make it look and act like windows, or Mac If I want to.
I can login from across the world and use everything I need, fully encrypted and secure.
It naively supports the most advanced encryption and data security systems in the world.
I can access my files from anywhere, securely.
I can install anything in less than a minute.
All my movies and music play fine.
I can tunnel to other countries, allowing me to watch my favorite shows on hulu.com from Colombia.
I can stream my cable tv to any other computer, and even my phone.
I can watch my HighDef cable tv, and record it for later, or burn it to a dvd.

Macs and PC's run the same hardware, both can run windows or linux. Just mac's cost twice as much.

On the Linux train you don't have to buy a ticket. You can always ride for free without hiding in the restroom.

I'm a long-time MS guy (beginning with MS-DOS 1.00.00), although I started "personal" computers long ago with Apple SOS (?), but that's a funny story

I also am a linux fan and have various linux boxes setup doing the majority of the work. I've been playing with *nix now for maybe 20 years.
