1992 documentary on the Caribbean Colombian Maroon Community of San Basilio Palenque located near Cartagena in the department of Bolivar. ... all » The focus is on present day descendants of African maroons who resisted against the Spaniards and claimed their liberty early during the colonial era with the escape of slavery and establishment of free communities termed palenques also known as maroon communities in English. This particular community was founded by the maroon leader Benkos Bioho, which is a hero to many Colombians of African heritage.

Robert Jorge says on May 31, 2007, 18:17: Good video Swinn88. Believe it or not, I really watched the whole thing. That's a pretty tough life. It looked like it was filmed in 1989. I think I saw "1989" on one of the billboards in the video. Has anything changed for the better since 1989? Being 18 years ago, hopefully things are a little better now. Like I said previously, I am not professing to know much about the topic ... racism in Colombia. But in my limited experiences, I didn't see much of it there. So, I will admit to being ignorant and perhaps naive. (Pertaining to the topic) Anyway, keep up the posts, and yes, your thread title was a little more attention getting this time ... at least for me, lol. --"I believe in making the world safe for our children. Swinn88 says on Jun 1, 2007, 08:46: I'm Glad you liked it Robert. Very little has changed since the video was filmed and the people of Palenque de san basilio still struggle. The Law 70 of Colombia 1993 In recognition of the right of Black Colombians to collectively own and occupy their ancestral lands actually has improved things however they are continuously being displaced by the Rebels and the Paras. A friend and I were talking the other day and he said to me. "There are so many Colombians in Queens(NY) and I feel like I want to be a part of them because we are from the same place but they don't want to have anything to do with me because of the color of my skin. They Know I am Colombian but because i'm black they have no use for me in their circle". That is why I want educate people about what really goes and how the actual Blacks and indigenous feel. By the way...not knowing something does no mean ignorance. refusing to learn from one another is ignorance. So I would not say you were ignorant or naive. I knew you the title would catch your eye. Thanks for viewing it. I will post more.

goin_south says on Jun 1, 2007, 22:34: Man, everyone wants a special day, eh? If everyone just focused on havin a special day, well....not every day, but now and then... we wouldn't have to have all these special f*qn days. What does it mean,... for someone to be: "Colombian...Enough" ... or, 'not colombian enough'? 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
