For my next Colombian adventure.....

I plan on visiting Villa de Leyva New Yeart's week with my novia from Medellin first time there)...planning on staying at the Duruelo hotel. Anyway, I want to visit the Lake Tota ..is that far away once in Leyva? What would be the best way to get there? I'd love to see that train and the background lake with my own eyes - it looks spectacular based on locolombiano's picture.

Also, how do I get to the hot springs in Paipa?

Final question: How is the weather in Villa Leyva in December, will I need a jacket like Bogota?

Thanks!

Boyaca Tour Start your tour in Tunja (Boyaca), it´s a small city with beautiful colonial churches and mansions, from Tunja you can take a taxi or bus to Paipa, the whole idea of Paipa is to go to any hotel around the Sochagota Lake, those hotels are "Spas" so basically you´ll be relaxing in the hot termal springsl, jacuzzis, pools, etc. and relaxing around the lake.
Then you go back to Tunja and continue to Villa de Leyva (about 40 minutes away), the Hospederia Duruelo is an excellent hotel. Villa de Leyva is one of the best preserved spanish colonial towns in Colombia.

Might I suggest and Alernate... hotel? Try the Hostería del Molino La Mesopotamia. A converted suger mill over 400 years old. The origninal mill stream still rums through the dining room. A side trip to Ráquira for the ceramics and potter. Real bargins at about 1/2- of the US costs. Paipa is not too far out of Tunja to the right away from the main road to Barbosa about 40 kn (25 miles) out of Tunja-well marked. If you go to Lake Totta be SURE and eat at Pozo Azul. The lake is about 3 hours out of Tunja say 100 km(60 miles). On the way stop and visit the Puente de Boyacá, a memorial of the fight which help free colombia from Spanish rule. On the right before you get to Tunja.

Be sure and have advance reservations for this time of year. Very beautiful and safe trip-have fun. Be sure to take a jacket and sweater. It can get down to the mid 40s so a lot like Bogotá

Have a great time

Thanks you guys!!! I will take all of this information and start planning my trip right away!

Colombiaboard: Thanks for gtting me started, I did not know what direction to start in first!

Gator: I think based on these comments that I will try to spend some time in both hotels: Duruelo & Molino La Mesopotamia.

Tinto: Thanks for the great links! I could not find much information on VDL on the web, and now you even provided the web sites/phone numbers to begin my journey!
