Nordic Battle Group
AMONG THE MORE stalwart American allies throughout the Cold War and the war on terror one can number Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and . . . Sweden. Wait! Sweden? The steadfastly "non-aligned"? Home of the cradle-to-grave welfare state, of the pacifist Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)? The country that lambasted us throughout the Vietnam War and which has regularly criticized our actions in Iraq? That Sweden?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Mar 23, 2008, 02:21: I'm not really into Swedish Jas Gripen fighter planes or Bofors cannons but I'm aware, only marginally, though, that the Swedish weapon industry has been flourishing for the longest time; we sold steel to Nazi Germany atthe same time as we kept stricy political neutrality and would not help our neighbour Finland when the Russian hordes crossed the border...so in a sense I'm not surprised at all: we share the very same pragmatic outlook onlife withthe gringos: a war is a good opportunity for profiteering. "I have opinions of my own, strong opinions, but I don't always agree with them."-President George W. Bush |
