Football

I am writing an article on football in Colombia for The Times. I would be interested to know anyone's thoughts on whether the problems with drug money/violence/murder (Andres Escobar, Alvaro Ortega) remain an issue, or is this a stereotyped image.

I am also planning to attend the Atletico Nacional v Independiente game next week. If anyone is going I'd be very interested to meet up.

Also does anyone have a telephone number for Nacional as I can't find one.

Finally, does anyone know the whereabouts of Andres Escobar's father, Dario, as I would very much like to meet him.

Thanks,

Rick

off the top of my head I don't know exactly where/when I saw this, but there has been some sort of football (soccer I presume?) - paramilitary connection, or mafia connection. Either way, the sport has some sort of connection to the "bad guys". PM me if you want me to look into it more.

It was something local here in Armenia.

Rick.. America de Cali, was 'partly' owned by the Rodriguez and has now since been taken of the Clinton black list, as the property was to be given back to the state under the conditions set by the courts.

Have a look through eltiempo.com.co for more informacion.

There is definetly still a connection, but it is not so highly visible as back in the 80' and 90's.

Streetfootballworld - Football for Development Rick,

I can support your drafting of the article. I worked for a FIFA affiliate in Berlin all summer, and previously in Medellin, now Bogota, on street football development. www.streetfootballworld.org. We support the FIFA in their outreach in most countries of the world, in difficult parts, with street soccer/football for social development. The project began in Medellin after Andres Escobar (by a visiting German professor) and still operates strongly in Colombia - and almost everywhere else. I live in Bogota, and will be here for any and all support. Please email or give me a call.

Wasn't Nacional owned by Pablo Escobar at one time? I think that is what I was told, but I am too lazy to try and research it.
