Football broadcaster Bob Griese apologizes for 'taco' quip aimed at NASCAR's Montoya
By Associated Press

10:47 PM EDT, October 24, 2009

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese apologized at the end of Saturday's Ohio State-Minnesota football game for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

Earlier in the telecast, during a promotion for coverage of NASCAR's Chase for the championship, a graphic listed the top five drivers in the points race. Fellow analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya, who is Colombian. Griese replied that he was "out having a taco."

As the telecast was wrapping up, Griese, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Miami Dolphins quarterback, apologized for the remark and said that Montoya is one of the best drivers in NASCAR.

In a statement released later, ESPN called the remark "inappropriate" and said Griese plans to apologize again Saturday night during the network's college football coverage.

"ESPN has spoken to Bob and he understands that his comment was uncalled for," the statement said.

I have no idea who the fok this Bob Griese is, nor do I care, but I bet if he said that a black NASCAR driver was ''out having a watermelon'', his ass would have been fired!

Here's a good opinion piece I found on this story:

Bob Griese: Stupidity Reigns in ABC's Broadcast Booth. by al asifyouknow al asifyouknowAnalyst

Analyst Written on October 25, 2009

During a promotional NASCAR spot in the middle of the Ohio State-Minnesota game, ABC’s college football analysis Bob Griese when asked where Juan Montoya was in the chase, Mr. Griese expert analytical answer was “ he is eating a taco”.

As you may already know Al Asifyouknow is a Hispanic, I understands some folks are making a big deal out of this comments, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t find those comments offensive.

Folks do eat tacos.

Was it a stupid, idiotic comment that had no place in a national broadcast?

Absolutely, it was stupid, but as we all know there is no law against “stupid” and there shouldn’t be!

If there was we all be in jail. Agree?

Here is lesson for Mr. Grease (not a spelling error) first you must look at a map of Mexico, Central and South America , things that should be noticed:

1) There are multiple countries with different names, example Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina etc, etc.

2) If your ambitious enough, you can Google the foods of those countries and discover that folks in Venezuela or Peru don’t know what a taco is and probably never seen one, heck they might think is a door stop and use it as such.

3) I know a couple third generation Mexican-Texan’s who prefer a good burger than a taco, so not all Mexican-Americans or Central or south Americans eat tacos.

4) Last! Mr. Griese, Juan Pablo Montoya is a Colombian, he may or may not like tacos, I don’t personally

don’t know the guy, I’m just a fan, I do know most folks in that area like Arepas and Empanadas, that I

know for sure.

I think if Mr. Griese had said “he is out eating an “Arepa con Carne” this would have been a non-story because it would have been a geographically correct statement.

There you go Mr. Griese , you should of paid more attention to your Geography class at Purdue rather than chasing the cheerleaders, it certainly would have been helpful during the Ohio state broadcast.

Look I don’t know what’s in Mr., Griese’s hart, but I’ll have to give him the benefit of the doubt, he probably didn’t mean anything derogative by that statement.

I understand he apologized before the game was over, I’m not big on those corporate induced apologies, they don’t hold much credibility .

He would of done just as well by saying nothing and move on, or just a “it was a dumb comment” statement would have been sufficient.

Of course that’s just my opinion , can’t talk for other folks who may have been offended by his taco comment.

I do hope ABC does not suspend him for that comment , the only thing that will do is fuel, or give the haters an excuse to justify their racism.

I tagged this story as a humorous one , because, well ,lets be honest with each other folks , isn’t kind of silly that grown man and ladies are still dealing with this kind of silliness?

There just got to be more things to worry about than this, isn’t there?

Wooo Nelly! My taco meat is burning ,sorry got to go!

Enjoy the race. Go Juan Go.

Enough said. Adios.

Yes, that comment would have been more accurate, or saying that he was out having some empanadas, also. But knowing that would be too much too ask from some meathead jock accouncer.
