Food/Candy that Colombia does NOT have...

Hey [again] :)

I am just wondering some things that I could bring from Canada that my Colombian friend would enjoy, like certain candy or potato chips and such.

I would ask her, but spoil the surprise hehe.
I sent her some Tropical Kool-Aid juice and she fell in love with it so..

There is candy like choclate "Smarties" that they don't even have in the U.S

So anyone who is a native Colombian and has visited North American, what did you love/enjoy that you wish you had in Colombia? Besides sexy gringos.. LOL ;-)

I would REALLY appericate any help amigos/amigas!

Muchos Gracias in advance for all replies.

Your Canadian Friend,
Jordan~

Things to bring Bring Maple Syrup. Colombians like pancakes and waffles but maple syrup is hard to find. If you do it is very expensive.

Pistachio nuts are a good one. There is not much North American food that would be worthwhile, think more European or Asian.

The Pirouline (Euro) sticks and the Pocky (Asian) sticks would be a big hit.

You can find Smarties in the US. I prefer M&Ms.

Colombians do not like spicy food.

If they sell Terry's Chocolate in Canada and I think they do, bring her a few Balls. It comes in 4 inch balls and besides Orange it also comes in Rasberry. It packs easy. Every time I go to Colombia, I bring a 1/2 dozen Balls.

Where in Canada ru from? Ontario, east coast, west coast, prairies?

I'd take some Mackintosh Toffee, doubt that's available in Colombia.

One thing that went over extraordinarily well with my relatives were fruit-leathers made by Sun-rype

Maybe some aero bars, and take a pack of smarties for you (great plane snack, as are the fruit-plus bars).

Also traditional christmas-season sweets like butter tarts, etc.

No Reese Cups In Colombia?? Thats hard to beleive! Though I never tried to buy them there that may be true. I used to send "3 Muskateer" bars to Col years back. I thought the whole world had Reesecups.BTW, those terry Chocolate Oranges also come in Rasberry also which is a nice Combo, I chop them up to put in Ice Cream I make from scratch (vanilla base)also as well as the Orange flavored ones. Both flavors are a taste of heaven..LOL

Resse cups, VS lotion and orange chocoalte.

You guys are on glue DONT send reeses or any other candy also available in the US, they have that all over there, at least they did in Bogota.

Here in NYC the odd store downtown actually carries Canadian candy bars, I have to pay like $2 for them though :( Crunchie is my favorite. :P

The toffee is a good suggestion, THAT is something I have never seen out of Canada anyways.

Jordan, my favorite potato chip used to be the Hostess Pizza-flavoerd chips when I was growing up, you could actually taste the cheese, sauce, mushrooms, and pepperoni on them, it was really incredible!

Milky Way The chocolate bar Milky Way in Colombia should not be confused with the UK chocolate Milky Way. It is rather, the equivilent of a Mars chocolate bar.

Kettle Corn and Twix and Unfiltered Lucky Strikes My fiance and his family love the salty sweet kettle corn I brought down once. And, Carlos just loved Twix...I think you can find Twix sometimes in Colombia, but I think the chocolate make-up is different in North America. And, if your friend is a smoker, I am telling you, bring unfiltered Lucky Strikes. You will held on high for that. Haha. :)

Food... Look, if you go to any mid sized supermarket you'll find Reeses, Milky Way. I can't believe someone wrote that maple syrup is hard to find. It's available everywhere.
Now, you may bring original canadian maple syrup, that'd be nice.
Also anything with canadian flags on it, chocolates, cookies, etc.
Colombian customs forbid any food that's not packed or processed, that means usually fruits and vegetables and raw meats, fish, etc. Apart from that you can bring anhything you want.

jordanxxx, I hate to tell you but the ketchup crisps are a British import I think, the dill ones are available in the USA, the Crunchie that Rubi likes is originally a Brit bar, the Terry's chocolate orange, yup British, Winegums, yup British.

Take them that vodka that is made with iceberg water, from Newfoundland I think..

You can buy pistachios in Colombia but they are very expensive. So if you bring anyone a few pounds, they'll think you've given them a real treat. We always haul about twenty pounds down with us and distribute them liberally. I always enjoy catching my sister-in-law hiding in a back room gobbling down her pistachios with a guilty look on her face when I find her. She's like a kid - that alone is worth the trip.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

On one trip at Christmastime Several years ago.. and knowing how expensive they were in Col , I brought a large frozen Butterball Turkey. Packed it frozen solid in a box encased with styrofoam then in a plastic bag. It was only partially thawed when I arrived in Bogota. The Rubes in the Aduana line did a double take when they pulled that baby out but they passed it sin problema. The Family I was visiting was thrilled to death and I remember them inviting neighbors to see it cooking in the oven. It was like the Holy Grail had arrived.LOL

Mor Anna's thin, crispy pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies)
