Food Question....

This may seem a weird question but my kids were the first to notice this....what is the strange aftertaste of the mozzerella cheese they use here in Colombia on pizza, lasagna, etc.? I was thinking maybe it was because we are used to such processed foods and maybe this cheese is fresher? At first I thought it was old cheese, but I have tasted it from lots of different places. Anyone know what it is?

Are you sure it was mozzarella? Or maybe mozzarella wasn't the only cheese used? If I am remembering correctly, queso costeno has a somewhat bitter taste (and aftertaste) and queso campesino/farmer cheese/queso blanco can be pretty salty. I'm not much of a cook, so I don't know if either of these cheeses would end up in a three-cheese pizza or a three-cheese lasagna.

I agree that all of the mozzarella I have bought here has the same strange taste. But the best purchased cheese I've tasted, with the least strange taste was Alpina brand.

Though I think if you are talking about food that is pre-cooked, I think they probably use a combination of cheeses.

There's one pie place in town that must put vanilla into the cheeze, not a nice aftertaste, but my wife likes it. Most places don't really use mozarella. It's like the "chocolate" in bakeries, usually darkened caramel or panela.

GIB I believe most places use "doublea creama" which in itself is a good cheese but for pizza it sucks....it just doesn't caramelize like real mozzarella....you can get mozzarella at the exito in little bags....and I believe there is an America brand too...also very correct ...very expensive

In terms of the strange aftertaste... I think it's some kind of animal product. I'm a vegetarian, but I can't stomach some of the cheese here... it really does taste like cow to me... and having not eaten cow for 15 years... i'm pretty sensitive to that type of taste. Must be some kind of animal fat. Yuk.

GIB lived in Italy in the past and so he knows... :-)
Yes, what they call mozzarella is NOT mozzarella at all!
But it is not true that you have to buy an imported mozzarella.
I found a good Colombian mozzarella, they sell it in Carrefour and Pomona. It is branded Del Vecchio and it is made in Bogotà! A 250 grams mozzarella sells for about 2800 pesos, not bad...
GIB and Vic (can it be the same Vic was talking about?), try it, it just lacks of salt to be a good mozzarella!

Rubito....I am jealous! About the only thing I miss from the states is good cheese that doesn't cost a fortune. I paid a ridiculous amount for a little block of feta that I just finally could not do without any more. It was heaven!

But if that is the only thing I miss, who can complain. For the most part the food here is fantastic.
Thanks everyone for the input, I will try to find that cheese in Carrefor.

Alpina makes a good camembert and a good brie, too. It is colombian, so it is not that expensive.

Ok, try the Del Vecchio mozzarella out and let me know if it is not good for the price.

In general I think the food in Colombia sucks! It's almost as bad as London. The British is at the bottom of my list.

Annual Drug Deaths: Tobacco: 395,000, Alcohol: 125,000, 'Legal' Drugs: 38,000, Illegal Drug Overdoses: 5,200, Marijuana: 0. Considering government subsidies of tobacco, just what is our government protecting us from in the drug war?--Ralph Nader

RussianFred, “Knowledge is power‿ and this saying applies to food in Colombia.
You sound like the rest of the Anglos or visitors who all of the sudden have an urge to travel to Colombia to meet a date.
I would say the same thing about the food from the states, all the fast food sucks!!
But I say, stick around, read some books about eating in Colombia, watch some Colombian programs about Colombian food and go to the finest typical Colombian restaurants and if you do not speak Spanish very well hire a translator.

Monpirri

As far as mozzarella .Alpina, also Del Vecciho is very good ,but pricey. Zenu are the best line of products overall when it comes to quality. there is a new product line of bottled sauces called Sassoon or something like that. The packaging is great and very elegant but the quality is garbage. Steer clear. I´ve tried a few and each one was worst then the next. Not cheap either.
