FOOD AND FRUIT MARKET IN CALI ?

can anyone tell me......is there actually a decent food market in Cali at any time during the week or if so, all week ? My colombian girlfriend in Cali insists that there isnt really a good market in Cali and the fruit is anyway of less quality than the supermarket. In fact, she says that the supermarket is not much more expensive. I find this amazing because i thought the supermarket was quite expensive when i go there when im in Cali. Furthermore, ive lived in Mexico and they have markets everywhere and they are always cheaper than the supermarket.
I dont have reason to disbelieve this girl as she is not lazy or dishonest but maybe she doesnt really know...

englishsettler, why don't you check EXITOS! The Exitos in Medellin had the best produce section I have ever seen, either in the usa or Colombia, or anywhere else. Really. It was fresh as can be, with a nice aroma, and vast selections. Being a sort of health nut, that was a striking memory. I have to think Exitos is working to make that a standard at all their stores, not just in Medellin. I am only imagining, that also most of what I saw there was much more pesticide-free, than what I know we are getting in the usa.

But, if someone knows differently, then enlighten me please.

And, I am only assuming that Cali has an Exitos store.

there are several produce markets with butchers', fish and seafood and grain in Cali, the best quality would be Galeria Alameda. It's open from 5 in the morning to 6 or 7 in the evening, every day of the week and is really quite large. The quality of the fruit and vegetables there is much better than in the supermarkets and everything is fresh especially on friday and saturday mornings when the produce is brought in sometimes from the Central Deposit, Cavasa just outside the city and also directly from the farms.

It's not much cheaper than in the supermarkets, however.

Desi

ok, thanks for the information. You know what, i think the supermarkets are expensive there and im english ( which means, things are expensive here in UK) so, god knows how the poorer people in colombia survive if the markets arent much less cheaper !

oh but the supermarkets come all on different shapes and prices too...if you were a poor person, say , living in a strata 3 neighbourhood like in Ciudad Cordoba, you'd buy your groceries at the Galerías supermarket there and spending much, much less than say a person from a strata 6 neighbourhood, say, Santa Teresita, shopping at Carrefour. Exito is a bit expensive, so is Carulla and of course, Carrefour. La 14 is a tad cheaper, Comfandi quite a bit cheaper and Galerias (they only have those in poorer barrios) cheapest. Produce markets like Galeria Alameda is located fairly centrally and is the most expensive, IMHO, the best food market in Cali, there are others, cheaper and messier ones at Sta. Helena, Siloé...

We used to buy all meat, fruit and veggies at the Alameda when lived in Cali, the other groceries at Comfandi or La14. Now, people have been shifting away from the produce markets and´more into supermarkets; the prices are higher, of course, but the freshness and the quality of fruit and veggies in supermarkets have improved much lately.

The bottom line is that you can spend either very little or a whole lot on food shopping in Cali depending where you buy.

Desi

Desi, then they have Exitos, of course, in Cali and Did you have the same opinion about the quality as I said I saw in Medellin?

It's Exito, galecito in singular. Yes, of course they have Exito in Cali, several of them. I think it looks like a Wall Mart but more expensive in comparison with the other chains. I liked Carrefour best of all supermarkets and Carulla in the second place. I don't usually shop in those places except for just a little stuff like when you're there buying some junk and just remembered that you were out of milk and coffee....

did you just go and take those pictures, arthur?
Yes, that's the place. Before they built a roof all over the place only the butcheries and grain sections were inside (also some vegetables and all potatoes) most of the fruit and veggies were in stands on an open patio. I kind of liked it better that way, but it did turn into a mud bath every time it rained.

I can't eat that stuff Last time I ate a seviche in Cali I had tummyache for 12 hours afterwards...too acid.

I used to buy tamales at Alameda and for many, many years I was there, every Saturday morning at the break of dawn with my shopping baskets...

Too bad this thread is in limbo between forums...
