I fly all the time with air france / klm. I used to gt the flights for 439 euro rtn however thinkits more expensive now. Have also gone via spain but it is far better with AF via Paris except the fact CDG airport sucks.

You might look at Icelandic or Martinair (but they used to be seasonal from the U.S. to Schiphol). Icelandic used to be one of the most economical, but you had to stop "you know where".

KLM is my choice (and City-Hopper to Limburg), but sometimes to ended up on junky old NW DC-10s, but has been a while.

If you can get to Europe, you can get anywhere cheaply (not necessarily conveniently) using RyanAir or EasyJet, especially if you (1)book well in advance and (2)are prepared to be dinged heavily if carrying overweight luggage. You might also need to take a bus from some airports. Get the cheapest flight you can get to London, Paris, etc. if it is much more expensive to fly straight to Amsterdam. From where in the US?

The Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam recieves good reviews. Hostels in Western Europe are well travelled and reviewed, if you pick one with good reviews that is age appropriate you won't have problems. Check out www.hostelworld.com for reviews, dates, bookings.
