Flying to Cartagena tomorrow (first trip)

Well, I am getting excited...except getting up at 5:00 a.m. to catch a 7:00 a.m. flight in Kansas City.

From there, flying to Atlanta, Miami, Bogota and finally Cartagena.

I will try to keep this thread filled in a journal or diary type of discussion.

Unfortunately for some lurkers, lol, I'm not going to be cataloging my exploits with 50 different women but I will be writing from a tourist's perspective on Cartagena, my Spanish classes and volunteer position as a soccer coach, my host family (the seem really cool, a lawyer and engineer and two children, one in college and the other in high school), etc.

I will be flying down to Cali from the 16-19th for a friend's birthday, so I can give some impressions of that city as well. I also have a business meeting in Barranquilla.

I will try to make it to Parque Tayrona or San Andres either this time or when I go down for good (I'm going to be teaching in Armenia) in late Julio. Everyone's been telling me to check out this "Festival of Flowers" in the fall...I'm really into peliculas, so I would like to go to a film festival as well.

Going to try to give my impressions of Babar, Mr. Babilla and Tu (La) Candela as well...I'm determined not to have any Benjamin Franklins or condoms taped to my forehead, lol.

No, I'm just going to be helping out as an "assistant," lol, and doing whatever I can.

Even though I've played since 4th grade, I don't presume to know soccer better than anyone in Central or South America.

I have coached volleyball, basketball and soccer at my high school back in Kansas City, so it was something I thought would be fun to do.

Well, it was so hot last night I could barely sleep with two fans going. I think this might be one of the drawbacks of the northern coast. I have a feeling I am going to lose 15-20 pounds, and I am 6 feet and 185 pounds right now....

I´ve been venturing around in the Barrio Getsamani. There are lots of beer bottles everywhere, but the people are very nice and friendly.

Almost 24 hours have passed and I haven´t been accosted by anyone selling something....

I am staying with a really nice family in the Manga neighborhood, right across the bridge from the section of town where Mr. Babilla is. I still háven´t gone to Las Cabanas, but I will be going out tonight I think.

I am going to buy a disposible camera and take some pictures of the fortress, the playa....hope to make it to Isla del Rosario as well in the next couple of weeks.

I´ve never seen so many motorcyles. I keep on thinking about the sicarios from the movie ¨Clear and Present Danger^ whenever I see one go buy.

Can´t comment much on the mujeres, will have more to report en domingo or lunes, when my spanish classes begin.

Thanks for the update Good to hear things are going. I remember my visit to Cartagena well -as we approached the door of the plane and I felt the heat I wondered if it were coming from the engines....on the bright side you'll be better aclimitized within a week or so.

Have fun at school! (LOL)

I know what you mean Morphus, I had the same problem in Florida last year with the hurricanes, no power for 9 days, no AC no fan.

I slept on the bare tile floor and stuck to it, my wife had to get a giant spatula to unstick me.

It is actually cooler than inland Florida, the sea breeze in Key West helps somewhat.
