Fly the Friendly Skies.....Yikessss!

"Nine people were injured when a Colombian plane with 54 people on board skidded off the runway on landing and ended up nose-first in the sea in the city of Santa Marta. The Aerorepublica airliner broke through the fence at the end of the runway at Simon Bolivar airport after landing in driving rain. Nine people were slightly injured in the accident, El Tiempo reports."

Old news dude, this happened a week ago. They already removed the plane and thankfully no one was seriously injured.

It's news to me. But, yes, it is good that no-one was seriously hurt.

Miguel, Thanks for the 411.

Some of those Colombian planes look scary. The airports are a trip.

Simon says on Jul 24, 2007, 11:53:

If they look scary, then don't take 'em. BTW, the plane in the story was Brasilian manufactured.

Yep. The plane was a Brazilian manufactured Embrar (sp?). I believe the same that Continental uses in the US for city to city flights.

i think it is embraer...i have flown those before...small checked luggage space, and an aisle on one side which only has 1 seat per row.....its those smaller puddlejumpers that put the fear of God into me when i fly those......

RUV ¿Which Colombian planes look scary? Maybe in remote areas of the country as the main stream airlines only operate newer planes.

The oldest ones are MD 83 of which Delta and American have hundreds of them still flying around, but we will phase them out next year. Aerorepublica is moving into a brand new Embraer 190 fleet (like the one in the incident which was 3 months old), aircraft which are very popular in the USA by airlines such as US Airways. Aires which operates new Canadian built Bombardier De Havilland Dash 8 and is getting Airbus 319 or New Generation 737 for its fleet, and even Colombia´s government airline Satena operate brand new Embraer 170 and 145 like the ones operated by Continental.

Airplanes like the DC 9 operated by Northwest and A300 operated by American are something of the past for Colombian airlines.

i dont worry so much about the plane itself....what interests me in the quality of performed maintenance......i have flown in some planes in eastern block countries, that i swear would disassemble midflight......scary enough to turn a latino into a pasty real quicklike....=)...

Miguel Calvo, I agree there. I have flown that prehistoric American Airlines A300 that flies into Bogota and it really looks creepy. but the aircraft in the incident was 3 months old and was being still flown by the factory pilots who are the ones that train the Colombian pilots.

is it known whether it was mechanical, factory defect, pilot error, airport runway, or global warming yet? or is it too early for the finger pointing?

I don't know what caused it, but it wouldn't surprise me if a few fools blamed it on Uribe.

i think it was either aliens from outer space or global warming.....or the brazilian pilots were checking out las colombianas bonitas and rubbernecking it while taxiing down the ramp....then the OH SHIT look on their faces as they went for a dip......then, that means they should be called "dipshits" cierto?

I'm pretty certain I heard Dave Letterman announce that the accident was caused by acid-rain, induced by global warming, but encouraged by Uribe's policies. ;)

speaking of "oh shit!"- Ford recently completed a 4 year survey of accident causes in pickups. They used "black boxes" from aircraft to record the last words before the accident.

In 68% of the cases, the last words were (surprise!) "OH SHIT!".

Except in Texas, Alabama, Tennessee and West Virginia - where 87% of the time, the last words were "Hold my beer and watch this!".
