Flights from UK

Couldn't find a forum topic on this so I thought I'd start one.

I've flown quite a few times from the UK to Bogota. It used to be quite an easy choice; Avianca or BA from London direct to El Dorado (the BA flight stopped for an hour at Caracas).

It looks as though the best deals now are with Continental; fly to Newark (from many UK airports) then onto El Dorado. Air France is a little more expensive but offers a better quality of service; again from many UK airports to Charles de Gaulle then onto El Dorado. I've not tried the Avianca flight which you can book online from Manchester or Heathrow to Barcelona (with BA or Iberia) then onto El Dorado. I have, however, flown with Avianca from Barajas which was very good.

Journey Latin America often come up with better deal than the airlines themselves.

I'm flying with Avianca from Madrid to Medellin via Bogota. All in it was £486, but then Avianca changed their flight times so I had to spend €80 changing them. And to get to Madrid I used BA which cost about £160, so all in it was £640, which I didn't think was too bad. Anyone get lower than that from the UK?

Flying from Uk First time I flew to Bogota was with Iberia from Madrid and vowed never to uese them again. Very Cramped and just generally crap.

I used Continental from london this year which flew to Newark first which wes good as it broke the jorney up. Downside is that you have to deal with American customs, but no big deal. I paid 540 but could have got cheeper at around 480 but I did not want to wait. Good thing is you deal with them direct and changes are possible on the ticket (although there is a charge and you need to make sure that change are possible on that ticket) but over all good service and flight. As said never again with Iberia.

royed31 I fly via the US for the same reason as you.

I find Delta better as Newark is just a pain in the ass, Delta fly via Housten or Atlanta, which are better airports I think that Newark.

For Brits Air France Not the cheapest I know but I use Air France because I hate the queues at US immigration. Also last time I went with Continental they lost my baggage and were rude to me about it.
For Colombians it seems France may now require a transit visa so no good for them.
I wish BA would reintroduce their direct flights or Avianca.

Newark vs. Atlanta? I've never travelled via the US to Colombia (until now it has been through CDG, MAD); how is that? Is it really annoying? Does it take a lot of time? Do customs give you a hard time coming from or going to Colombia as a European?
I was wondering that as Delta has the cheaper fares...

Miami Well I still like going via Miami from London because Virgin do an excellent premium economy. Also from Miami you can fly to any city in Colombia direct with the option of staying the night at Miami. Not the cheapest but worth the extra money.

Of course this is only for Europeans, a Colombian wouldn't be let in to the USA.

Air Canada I have flown via New York with Continental (not the cheapest), via Miami with AA, via Madrid with Avianca (crap - 27 people overbooked and I got to stay in nice hotel with my son but Colombian husband with no visa for Spain got to spend the night on a sofa in the airport) and with KLM via Amsterdam (lovely food but very expensive). This Christmas just gone we flew with Air Canada for the first time. It was the cheapest deal for Xmas we could find (around £840) and we thought they were great. Food good, service excellent, only an hours wait in Toronto and a shorter journey that other times. Would do it again. Am looking at Xmas this year and they are still the cheapest at the moment (£650 ish), but wouldn't mind stopping over in Miami so will look at the virgin option and also because we need to fly to either Cartagena or Cali.

thur I have flown four times via the US, I am a UK citizien never had any problems at a US airport with immigration.

I just recomend Atlanta over Newark, as Newark is a bit crazy between immigration and the departures area.
