If Detroit is a sh´*t hole, then it is the Detroit of England. I think the writer must have got some action when he was there, nothing but ugly grey buildings & the worst accent you´ve ever heard. I think the only thing it´s famous for is the spaghetti junction, great if you like spending your days stuck in traffic!

I love Medellin but...

" a thriving nightlife and the burgeoning neighborhood of Lleras Park packed with boutiques and trendy restaurants, Medellin is effortlessly Colombia's best-kept secret."

Where is this bustling nightlife? The nightlife is alright I guess... umm, not that great, and if that is thriving nightlife, no wonder Birmingham makes the list.

And to use burgeoning Parque Lleras, heart of Poblado, as an example, gimme a break. Yeah, Medellin as witnessed by the typical Poblado-lover tourist. There are plenty other way better things that make Medellin great that are NOT its 'thriving' nightlife and Parque Lleras, both of which could be considered, ummm, let's just say shouldn't by any means put Medellin on a map.

As for Birmingham, well, I have heard great things about it, and apparently it is rapidly changing. My only impressions of it are an ugly-ass shithole, but things can change, and I have heard some very good things from very reliable sources. I have to check it out and see for myself when I'm back in England in April, I guess.

I much as I love Medellin, it still has some work to do before it can make its debut on the world stage of truly great cities, but they are working on it.

All this will come with time, hard work, commitment, and change, change that can only come from the Colombian government with regards to new laws to help improve business, travel, investments opportunities, as well as providing a confortable life in Colombia for foreigners without all the red tape to get things done.

In the meantime, hopefully, we all can contribute something positive to the transformation of Medellin, Colombia in one way or another.

Peter (Moderator) says on Feb 16, 2008, 11:42:

I agree Medellin isn't one of the worlds' great cities yet, despite its climate. There are almost no walkable areas in the city, hardly any enjoyable city parks with green in them, and the center is a mess.

Then again, if they play their cards right (and don't give every neighbourhood the 80s feel of Lleras with it's flashy and bad restaurants), it definitely has potential.

I visited Birmingham about 15 years ago, I remember burnt-out cars outside of my friends' appartment (which had steel bars in front of the windows) and fights after the pubs closed. I guess it must have gotten a lot better :)

gatogris says on Feb 18, 2008, 10:55:

The clearest sign to me that Medallo has a ways to go is the overcompensation of the locals - is it really necessary for every conversation to contain a blatant, over-the-top exaggerated diatribe of Medillin boosterism? I realize the city (and for that matter the country) has really gotten a raw deal form the press, especially internationally, but for how long will every foreigner have to assuage the fragile egos and stroke the civic pride of every paisa encountered?

One thing that will clearly indicate that Medellin has moved on is when the locals themselves have no need to so relentlessly pound the drum of their city's greatness, when they can calmly appreciate the good like everyone else, and even feel comfortable discussing their city's flaws.

Plus, like the Bard and I'm sure plenty of paisas have noticed, boosterism can have the opposite of its intended effect, he had guilty Gertrude see this in the play within the play: "The lady dost protest too much, methinks."

I like Medellin, but who's gonna flock to a city who's main claims are "Not as dangerous as is was when Escobar was alive" or "The only Metro in South America"... I mean it's not exactly Rio... it's not even Cartegena.

The problem isn't being proud of your city. The problem is that a lot of Paisas just won't shut up about it and act like it is the only place in Colombia or the rest of the world that is worth a shit.

I really like Medellin and personally find that people are a lot friendlier than those in Bogota(especially Northern Bogota), but the constant blathering about how great Medellin is tends to get old fast. It comes across as overcompensation resulting from insecurity.
