First trip to Cartagena

Just want to thank everyone for all the useful info. I'm brining my ATM card for Bank of America and some travelers checks. Is it useful to bring alot of singles in case my friends (not me, ha ha) want to go to a strip joint. Are USDs useful in Colombia like they are in Mexico?
I'm trying to compile a list of the best places to go. I know dolce vita is a hot spot and I know to talk to some guy named Tony when I get to the beach. My friends and I (all 29 single straight) are looking to have fun, not meet a wife...well, maybe just a short term one. Thanks again. My trip is from March 21-28 and we're staying at the Decameron in Cartagena. Its already booked so no need to tell me about a cheaper condo. Thank you for all your help.

Much better you deal in pesos, cuidado! "Dolce" Vita is a rip off B-joint, Tony is a scam artist, stop getting info from WSG. Beach in the day time- Old Walled City at night.

Babar ,Mr. Babillas , and Tu Candela (my three favorites). don't bring American money. When you get there find a good ATM (there is one right across the street from Decameron) and withdrawal money there.

Take advantage of the free beer and drinks. I know i certainly did. And don't expect to bring any chicks in the hotel. They will try to charge you $60 a person per night if you do. if need be, find a rent by the hour type place. I found one close for 20K pesos.

Don't say we didn't warn you not to stay there. It really isn't that bad but there are much better options. And be prepared to sweat your ass off since the AC sucks.

Love and happiness!

KEEP IN MIND THAT BANK OF AMERICA CHARGES $4.00 WHEN YOU WITHDRAW MONEY FROM OTHER ATMS, ON TOP OF THE ATM CHARGES FROM THE BANK YOU WITHDRAW MONEY FROM. I just use my credit union atm card. No addtional charges.

Smile if you are a thinker!

Tony the tout eats newbie gringos like you for breakfast ! For sure he will be asking you to buy him some beers, and for sure he will grossy overcharge you. Keep a close count on the number of beers and ask the price before hand.

You will also find yourself paying for taxi fares for whatever chica he calls for you. Here again you will be over charged. He will also extract a gringo finders fee from the chica for services rendered. I have seen him in action, quit funny to watch.

As for the Decameron, expect some long waits for the elevator, better to get a room not too high up in case you decide to walk up to your room. Its a fair walk from the Decameron to Tony's area of the beach with is directly across from the Caribe Hotel. Just a minute or two by taxi. If you do decide to walk, watch out for the touts following you and trying to sell you worthless trinkets or badly recorded cd's. Best to put on some sunglasses and plug in some earphone and ignore them. They get very persistant.

LDV (la dolce vita) is a sure score. Just wave over any chica you like. Be prepared for inflated pricing. Without spanish language skills, you will pay more.

Enjoy the trip :)

Tony is funny. I met him and he knew I was from NY right away. He wasn't
robbing me of anything! I didn't so much as buy him a beer, although I talked with him a while about his time in the states. He actually knows history as well as whorehouses!!!

mjordan2169,
there's a quite nice guy here on PBH that can help you. His name is Jorge Conejo. Google find his name on this site and call him. Tell him that Morphus sent you.

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."
