first time travel

having established communication on the internet and by phone I am contemplating a trip to the medellin area to meet the woman that has captured my attention. My spanish is poor if nonexistant. Any advice on interacting, safety, etc. would be welcome. Thanx in advance!

Get a good Spanish-English dictionary - you'll need it a lot at first. I used to never go anywhere without it. Now I occasionally use it to look up a new word.

Same boat as Utopia I've been using a dictionary quite a bit. Even my girlfriend will look up a word that I don't know. Sure helps a lot. I also got one of those 501 verb books. With just those two books, I have more or less managed to teach myself spanish. I wouldn't say I'm great or anything, but it sure helps.

With the assistance of my wife who does not speak any English, I was also able to learn to communicate in Spanish in fairly short order. Now hearing her learning to speak English with her cute accent, I can understand why she likes to hear me speak Spanish. That accent knocks me out!

Here´s something nobody has asked:
Where does the lady live in medellin? will she pick you up at the airport? will you stay with her AND her family or just you two?
Safety: well, just stick to her, I mean, she knows the place so she won´t take you to a bad area.

i went to medellin and i dont speak spanish either. i have basically no spanish skills and i was just there a couple weeks ago. But I had a bilingual friend pick me up at the airport and I never left the hotel alone. One day I was alone at the hotel and my friend would not arrive until afternoon. I considered walking 2 minutes up the street to the internet place where I was just the day before. I would have felt comfortable enough in the internet place alone but I was affraid to walk there by myself. I felt pretty safe there as long as I had someone with me.

espanol Hy everybody,
look I learned speaking spanish in just twoo years fluently (an some people say "perfect"). do you want to know how i did it? I spoke spanish with everybody who could speak it! Forget every dictionary and any clases you could enjoin... it`s stupid. you cannot speak a lenguage by learning... you learn a lenguage by speaking! thats the problem. search somebody with whom you can learn spanish (i`d like to ne this person too) ;) and than speak!!! And i`m sure in 3 month you know the most important things. (in this way it happens with me)
Try it chico! :)

Go for it My first question would be does she speak English? If she does you will have absolutly no problems. If she doesn't you have your work cut out for you. Question two: What neighboorhood? That will decide your hotel arrangements. I have been to Medellin in August 2004 to meet a special woman I meet on the internet and on the phone over the course of a year. After each of us decided we were both real I went for it. I speak very littel Spanish. She meet me at the airport but she was unable to go inside. Once you get off the plane you will be given the assistance of a English speaking person to help you through customs, no problem at the airport. We drove to the hotel and they had an English speaking person at the front desk at all times, so no problems there. In regards to safety I was not worried at all. The media makes it more severe than it is. It's a larger city than I used to but you can look and determine what and who to stay away from just as in any metropolitan city. The people are nice and I had no problems, just try and blend in. The weather is great and fruit and fruit drinks everywhere you go. American dollars goes a long ways so it can be a reasonable trip. My hotel rah about $45 dollars a night and included breakfast. For $5 you can get a good dinner. Taxi's and busses are the main form of transportation. The minimum is $2500 pesos, about a dollar. Yuo can travel by cab real cheap. If she is nice and you want a good vacation go fo it. I'm going back for another 15 dyas in december.

Sad, sad man You really have to be a sad, desperate, ugly guy to have to come all the way to Colombia just to get some pussy. Dude, why don't you save the money, join a gym and get a life so you can meet some girls in US. It's people like you that make us look bad here.

assumptions thanx for all the great ideas and advice. I will probably implement all in some way. just to clear the air, I am neither ugly nor hard up but am fed up. Have tried the U S and other countries too but the words I got back from the woman in Colombia did it for me. She just happens to live there. I will continue to share this saga as I have enjoyed the others I have read.

good luck magicheater I hope all turns out wonderful for you. Many of us in the forum went through the same experiences and decided that Colombianas are best. I tried the US, Europe, and all other Latin countries via dating sites. It took me a while to realize that the Colombianas in general are the best in conversations and friendliness. Since I know several Colombian families in the USA, I am reassured that it will be even better in Colombia.

I do not understand your attitude w.a. - I see nothing that magicheater wrote to call for such a rude post.

pretend your a white boy in south central L.A. get to know the area.

do your homework , if its your first time you may want to be close to the airport.

consider Panama first, that way you wont be so considered about family members.

If you dont blend in , dont sweat it but yet be aware of your surroundings. dress casual.

your gonna love it there, colombia is so full of life and flavor.

especially the weekend parties.

Some good points here, Magicheater Other than that blockhead william_andrew's B.S.
Street smarts and as much Spanish as you can learn should be your first priority. Check out the Pimsleur Audio lessons, upgrade to 2000 Spanish Verbs (Living Language), learn a little history about Colombia and A LOT about current events, be polite, and have the time of your life.

Don't bother with Panama - there was a whole thread here on how difficult it is for good-looking Colombianas to go to Panama - they basically have to prove they are not working girls. Just go to Medellin and have her meet you at the airport. Everything will be cool - she will make sure nothing happens to you. Been there. Done that.
