Question.
I'm currently trying to plan my first trip to Colombia. I'm a single guy coming alone. I would appricate some feedback on the most worthwile places to visit and why. I've read nice things about many of the cities but the longest time I'll be able to stay is 3 weeks so I'm going to have to narrow it down. I don't want to spend my whole trip travling.
Thanks for your time.

itaguifun says on Apr 2, 2005, 20:05: Alone hiking around Colombia with elementary Spanish?? I would not advise going to Colombia at all for "hiking around". Colombia is a dangerous country, especially for those who are alone and ignorant of the local goings on. Certainly those who go in search of "flora and fauna" are prime targets for kidnapping. I would definately stay away from any bus/taxi travel outside of the city. Guerilla activity has been on the increase and I am certain you do not want to get spanish lessons from them. If you do not know someone or have a contact down there it would be fool hardy to go freewheelin' cross Colombia, you are definately NOT in Kansas anymore.

We have been training forever and when we are done we just want to go somewhere and drink and be spoiled. Where should I take the little fella? We both speak spanish pretty well and have experience traveling to many other countries in central and south america. We like hot women, scotch, beer, good food and some fun activities like paragliding or something. I was in cartagena a few months back and went diving and took a flying lesson out to some island. (TIP: don't do the flying lesson if it is windy, better yet just don't do it, I had a bungy cord holding the little cessna door closed) From reading the posts It seems like medellin is my kinda place. We don't care much about the beach right now. Can you give me specific advise like hotels or at least neighborhoods. I recall reading soething about el poblado. We are two well behaved guys and we plan to spend some money on food/drink for the local economy. thanks

There are some dynamite river rafting trips available there. I like the Pacuare river, but there are others. Two coasts and every possible climate from cold and rainy to warm and sunny to hot and muggy.

I guess idling at Chipichape Mall and looking at young caleñas pass by is out of the question; day trips touring the lovely valley of Cauca outside the city unsafe, driving up the western cordillera towards Buenaventura might be doable, daytime especially. The scenery is beautiful and there are small restaurants that serve hot chocolate and pandebono, some estaderos and clubs too. A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

My current boyfriend is Colombian by birth. He is the most fabulous person I have ever met!! He has lived in America for most of his entire life. He still has family in Colombia that he visits every year. He is going back this year during the holidays and said he would like to take me with him, but said that he fears that it would be too dangerous for me and that I would be kidnapped. He said that my blonde hair and green eyes would make me a target. I speak very good spanish, actually I speak better spanish than he does! He has family in Cartagena & Barranquilla. Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Jul 30, 2005, 16:31: gringa, I think it would be entirely safe for you to travel to Cartagena and Barranquilla with your boyfriend in spite of your blonde hair and green eyes. After all, you'd be there with him and the chances of being kidnapped in Cartagena are really very slim unless you're the daughter of Bill Gates or some international celebrity with tons of money. I don't want to sound mean but the impression I got was that he doesn't want you to go to Colombia with him because he'd rather go there as a single guy. I do have a friend that I will be staying with for about 1 week, and he is going to help me find an apartment close to the school (Universidad EAFIT) Can anyone tell me about this school? Is it considered a safe area? I live in NYC, so nothing much shocks me, and I would definitely say that I am street smart, but my Spanish is at an elementary level (will be studying in Peru before I come to Colombia so it should get better). Receiving gifts from these places is appreciated... it has become a joke though, when Americans (like myself) bring gifts, they say "made in China"... hehe. Your ideas of candy, personal hygienne items and school supplies are all good ideas. Especially if they actually say "made in Canada". If you are bringing gifts to family/friends and know sizes... clothing is very expensive in Cartagena, so jeans and athletic shoes are great gifts... but shampoos, perfumes (they love Victorias Secret body sprays!) and yummies like this are greatly liked with women. The people in Cartagena are very friendly especially if you are a tourist. Don't be surprised but people will beg for small change, just as in any city where there is poverty. Children, young men, old folk alike. With children, if you start handing out change you will be swarmed. Be subtle if you want to give them change. If you don't want to be bothered, be stern but respectful and say NO TENGO MONEDAS (I don't have any change). Making eye contact and smiling to vendors or others who might want to sell to you is usually an invitation to approach you. Cartageneros have a huge respect and appreciation of tourists because they love their city and want foreignors to love it too. They also know that without tourism, many would be without work.

nena_cgena says on Feb 4, 2006, 21:30: GIFTS Thinking more about it, the gifts are appropriate for people you may be visiting or as a thank you for those who might be helping you or you might be staying with... handing out gifts to random locals would just be seen as weird. Although you think it may be 3rd world, they have pretty much everything we have here... sometimes just harder to find and much more expensive.

It is true people, life exists beyond our borders... have fun and discover the beautiful countries of the world. I LOVE CARTAGENA,COLOMBIA - EVERYONE MUST GO AT LEAST ONCE, YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE! The most romantic and magical city I've ever been!

nena_cgena says on Feb 4, 2006, 21:49: GRINGA, DID YOU GO? Although this post was written 7 months ago.... I'm curious if you went to Colombia and what you thought. If you have not yet gone, please know that Cartagena is probably the safest city in Colombia, tons of tourists - Europeans, Canadians, Italians, Americans... blonde hair and light colored eyes is not uncommon, especially since Colombians can be true blonds with light eyes. You would stand out more just because you are foreign, regardless of your hair and eye color. All foreignors stick out. Barranquilla is considered safe as well. I'm surprised your boyfriend would have even brought up the subject of kidnapping... that's stupid. Here's a tip, if you are the daughter of a wealthy oil-company executive , don't go backpacking alone in the rural mountains of Colombia... that's the shiht you would need to be concerned about.

carotp says on Mar 24, 2006, 14:30: because of people like you is why we have such a bad image in the exterior....why you have to say something about a theme you hardly know....bogota is a great city, have a nice cold weather, it can be a little insequre is you don't know where you are going, is just a big city....but you could see a little of everything, good places to hang out...well barranquilla, kind of hot, but with breeze...is a great city if you know where to go...is not at all gross, better than many cities the thing is that is not as turistic as Cartagena, or Santa Marta, to live is a great city, good and friendly people, and please don't say that is as buenaventura. visit it first and then you make comments... There's nothing better than wine and sunsets. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Both of the hotels where I'm staying have asked me for either 50% or all of my lodging costs in advance. Is this normal and safe to send my credit card info to them via fax?

kdewell says on Jul 9, 2006, 10:27: Just Returned from a 5 week vaca in Cali hi, i just returned from my first visit to cali colombia. i had the most amazing time while i was there. i am 18 years old and went alone, but stayed with friends while i was there. i dont speak a word of spanish, but my host sister speaks english and i was always with her. my parents were not happy about my trip when i first informed them that i was going, but as of returning safely and with no problems, they are thinking about joining me next time. i really have to say that the majority of the news and media that you hear about colombia is only the bad things. every country has its downside, and it just happens to be the only thing that is broadcasted. colombia has many interesting cultural and economical aspects to it, and i would have missed out on visiting an amazing country, had i not gone. <3 whitney 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
