Hey people..been reading posts on this site for a while now. ALot of great info...some pretty funny also. Ive been wanting to go to Colombia for a long time. And now that I have the time Im gonna do it. I have a friend who has recommended Bogota for a first time trip to Colombia.
Just a couple Q;s hoping to get some advice.
1. Eventhough Im half Mexican I look white. Is there a certain way to dress in order not to bring too much attention to myself? Ive traveled alot to Mexico City and Im wondering if the same precautions apply to Bogota. Im not flashy and Im not a high roller/big spender type but I like nice restaurants and bars and I do tend to dress a little trendy at times.
Just a little concerned seeins how its a new country for me and I dont know anybody there to ask for advice.
2. I there any advice you guys give someone who is going by themselves?
3. Im an avid surfer but dont know any info on the beaches there. Any heads up would be greatly appreciated.
Im guessing that amost of you have answered this question more than you care to say but Ive g-one through alot of your posts and the ones Ive listed above I didnt find answers for.
Thanks
"Nick"

Robert Jorge says on Jan 14, 2008, 10:27: I wore shorts all the time. So did locals. Here is my buddy Lucho ... he is llanero, owns a taxi, lives in Villavo, pretty indicative of an average local. He who farts in church, sits in his own pew. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Jan 14, 2008, 10:31: But, to go out dancing, or to eat, definitely shorts are not appropriate or normally worn. More guys wore long pants than shorts - true, but on the other hand wearing shorts isn't unusual or wierd. Now, if Lucho was wearing shiny white Nike's with white socks ... then he would be, by default, a gringo. He who farts in church, sits in his own pew. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

bartolo_colon says on Jan 14, 2008, 11:12: Wear a panama hat and a cargo vest over your hawaiian shirt. Always carry your camera around your neck. And wear shorts, in order to showcase your hairy white legs. Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Jan 14, 2008, 11:26: Yep, bartolo, that's a gringo. Another characteristic of the gringo is the white tennis shoes while wearing jeans or even khakis. What is it with the Tommy Bahama style Hawaiian shirts? There is nothing wrong with them, but they are unseen in Colombia except when worn by gringos. A suggestion: If you like the feel of an untucked, short sleeve, button down, woven shirt and you are going to Colombia, invest in a few guyaveras (sp?). You can wear those with jeans, slacks, no problem. And you won't stick out like a sore thumb. They are probably much more common on the coast, but I saw them worn by locals in Villavicencio regularly. He who farts in church, sits in his own pew. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Sunchaser says on Jan 14, 2008, 17:40: Bartolo...you are too funny! As a matter of fact I just got back from Hawaii and you just about summed it all up in regards to all the "howley" tourists in town. For any of yous that dont already know..."howley" is the word used by the locals to describe anybody from the mainland. Especially pasty white gueros.

msaucey says on Jan 14, 2008, 21:26: Sunchaser, just as an FYI... Guero is a Mexican word and is not recognized or even known to the majority of colombians.... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
