Firearms in Colombia

I am an American born citizen who will be moving to Bogota within the next 12 months. Both my parents were born in Colombia so I am going to start the process from here in the states to get my Colombian citizenship. What are the laws in regards to hand guns, shotguns, rifles, etc.? What is the process to get licenses, permits, etc.? How long does it take? What firearms am I allowed to have? What are the calibers allowed for civilian defense? 9mm, .40 cal, .45 cal, 10mm, .380?

I currently have a .45 caliber handgun and want to know which firearms I am allowed to have in my apartment in Bogota and would also want to get a shotgun for my finca in Villeta.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Ciao,

Search The Site-Has Been Discussed Ad Nauseum First, get your cedula then you can start the process, not before.

The government controlls everything from sales, licensing, ammo Only 9mm/45 cal (and the ammo) is available for purchase through the state run "gun shop". You will need to get a special permit to carry the 45. As far as i have researched, you will not be able to import any new or used firearms, so you have to purchase whatever they (Indumil) have in stock at the time....I understand that collectible antiques can be brought in (black ball/powder, etc) There are relatively small fees, a training class unless you have prior military/law enforcement experience) . You would be suprised to know how many people are actually CCW. Just take a look at the security officers desk drawer when you check in to go into some government finance offices.....There are normally a drawer full of firearms, mostly old 5 and 6 shot revolvers blue steel with broken wood grips (and probably green bullets!) that have been "checked in" like it was a coat check for jackets! and no receipts are issued, so you may not get "your" gun back, but you will get "a" gun back..... hahaha...but like Gator says, use the google search button on the left column to search this site.....there are some pretty specific postings by several people.

Just my opinion...and brought to you by a kinder and gentler

one thing I don't think we have covered about guns and CCW is the following problems:
although you may have a CCW there are restrictions on how and when you may carry it :
1)for example right now till the end of year you can not anywhere in Colombia ride a motorcycle with a gun even if you have CCW unless you are police military or security personnel
2)at the moment you can carry it on your person and in your car
3)remember the restrictions change from city to city and state to state
4) during elections and special days (like Bush visit) you cant carry a gun at all
5) the biggest problem is there is no way to find out about the restrictions so its a hit and miss unless you spend a lot of time at Idumil

I didnt know that you have to buy guns off the state. I dont think thats very accurate, my father is a gun collector, not just the old stuff and he managed to bring some Heckler and Koch stuff from Germany and the Ministry of Defence Issued him the permits eventhough he hasnt got a cedula.

Cerealkiller You don't have to buy the guns off the state, you can buy them overseas and bring them into Colombia as long as all the paperwork is correct.

Also you can make your own ammo, most of my friends collect the spent cardridge cases and hand them to a guy who prepares them for re-use.
