find a sim card for my old nokia

Hola,
I am a foreigner de vacaciones in Medellin now and did not succeed finding a place in Bogota where I can find a sim card for my old nokia. All they did in the various comcel shops I visited, was trying their own sim card in my old nokia and say no, it does not work, sorry we dont have...I have done this in the philippines witout any problem and I dont think my nokia, although quite old, is not that obsolete.
Can somebody give me any advice . I will stay a few days in medellin than move to Caratagena after so you can give me advice for both towns.

any recommendation for salsa dancing place Medellin Hola,
I m a male european foreigner (53 yo) , intermediate level salsa dancer. I m in Medellin for some days and I would like to know about dancing places specialized in salsa in that city.

Another BIG question. In europe, it is a common usage to invite a girl to dance salsa either she is alone or with a friend/novio, at least in salsa dancing places. It seems to me it is a little different here in Colombia, I had some difficulties to do that (inviting a girl to dance)in my first try in Bogota: there were not so much girls alone and when I invited one who was with a male friend/boyfriend, it seems that it was something that cant/shouldnot be done, she just say no with a big surprise expressionon her face.

Thanks in advance for your help

Your phone is blocked Many (all?) cell phones are programmed to only accept SIM cards from the carrier that sold the phone. They don't want you running off to another carrier with your cheap/free phone.

You can have some phones reprogrammed to remove the block and there are some threads on this board that go into more detail. But, your best bet is probably to just get a prepago phone.

When I was there, I couldn't get a SIM card, but I could get a prepago, no problem.

About sims Your Nokia phone might also be working on different GSM frequencies from what comcel uses. Colombia is pretty much on US standards, not European ones. Unless you have a tri or quad band phone you might be out of luck.

I second the opinion that you should just get a cheap prepago phone from Comcel. For $80,000 (pesos, obviously) you can get a phone and something like $50,000 in call time. Then recharge as needed.

Sony Ericsson T610 Hello my young tekkie friends, I like to know if I take my cell to Barranquilla will I be able to have a new SIM card put in so I can use it in Colombia? and what calling plans are available? or, it's better for me to just purchase a new cell in b/quilla and leave my cell phone in the states? and what are the average prices for a camera cell phone?
Corroncha and proud of it!

Easy test The easiest way to see if your phone is blocked is to try swapping cards with someone who is using a different carrier here in the states before you leave.

For example, I have an unblocked nokia that I can put in any sim card, reboot, and it wakes up with a new identity (that of the current sim card). If I tried that before I unblocked it it would say "blocked" or somesuch and not do anything more.

If it's blocked, there's no point in taking it anywhere (unless you want to pay the outrageous roaming fees).

MHz your Phone need to supprt 850 and or 1900 Mhz, if you use a tri band phone from europe it will not work because even it has 1900 MHz in order to use 1900 your phone should have 850 MHz as well

if you need to find the bands(frequencies) your phone has, look it up at www.phonescoop.com
1. make sure it is at least a dual band phone having the 800(850) and 1900 bands, comcel uses 800(850) while OLA uses 1900, movistar uses the 800(850). the 850 is better becuase the signal pentrates buildings better so you have better reception indoors. if your phone only has the 1900 band and not the 850 then you are stuck in using OLA and from experience, they are not the best.

2.make sure it is completely unlocked othewise it won't work in colombia, on the sony ericssons that i have that means network and service provider. i use a motorola v600 and razr V3 without a problem.i prefer comcel, their signal has always been strong and consistent when i call my fiance on her cell, whether inside a mall, movie theatre or building where she works.this also has to do with the phone, generally speaking sony ericssons and nokias have a reputation for strong signal reception.

Does Comcel Prepaid SIM support data? I am a business traveler coming to Bogota in April. I want to buy a prepaid Comcel SIM on the internet before I come, and use it with my GSM Quad Band 7100g Blackberry when I arrive. In order to receive email on my Blackberry, the Comcel prepaid SIM will need to support data services. Does anyone know if it does? Does anyone have any experience using a Blackberry with a prepaid Comcel SIM?
