finca

(Written by dave)
my colombian wife and I( were in the States) are interested in purchasing some land, maybe a nice Finca in Southwestern Colombia, her family has a nice finca in a town near Lago Calima (Valle Dept.) they purchased it for US 20,000
is that still so now, as far as real estate being cheap.
Does anyone know about real estate prices, investments, etc
would appreciate any info

RE: finca There are still some unfriendly types in that area I think. You can probably get a good deal on a farm that you will never be able to visit safely. But then again if you wait for things to change prices will go up. If you buy land here you are speculating that the "rebel" problem will go away some day. Expecially South West of Cali area. Some folks in that area are selling farms because they are too afraid to go to them so be savy of the motive of the seller.

Personally it wouldn't be worth it to me to go flashing a bunch of gringo money around even if I had it, which I don't. But you do what you want. Colombians already have a stereo type of all Americans being rich. Buy some land down here and you will confirm it and could become prime grade A kidnap/robbed meat. The risk is yours.

Sorry to hit this idea so hard but if you are going to make a decision you should look at all sides of it. You posted no concern in your question which led me to beleive you are only seeing dollar signs in your eyes and need to get more informed about the risk before you consider buying.

Do you mean Pace? You can go I guess. We have relatives there they are not leaving or anything but I as an American they would not recommend me go and stay for an extended period. I have to say we have a farm (near Pitaco) and on it we have some land to build a house, it was a wedding gift and is part of my wifes family farm. We are not building that is for sure. To visit is one thing but the areas you are speaking of are ok for a visit but are you thinking of living there or visiting? Even if you visit everyone is going to know your business and if you are an American you are premature in buying it and being safe. Just my opinion, others might disagree. What is your life worth?

Darien, Buga and Tulua is North, popayan is south. They are all very pretty. Darien has a beautifull lake. Which area were you looking?

Buy a condo in the city you can always rent it if you don't live in it. A better investment in my opinion.

Oh and what is safe during the day is maybe not safe at night. In fact according to my relatives it is not safe at night.
