Stocks Here´s a little correction to Tinto´s post.
Most colombian brokers charge 1% commission and even less depending on the size of the transaction.
For a foreigner the best option initially would be to invest in ADRs or contact one of several stock funds available in Colombia.
Try this one:
www.corfinsura.com.co
There are others but at the moment I don´t remember their names.

Long Term I think the investment with the most long term potential for those under,, 40? is the purchase of a small farm, say 500 acres plus with a “ramshackle” house in an area where it is NOT safe and the owners have been driven out or are “fed up” and want out !!!

You can’t be CLUELESS about this. I know one Colombian from the U.S. that has 5000 Papaya under cultivation. HE IS A HAPPY MAN TODAY. Government “broke up” the controlling cartel, you know, they ones that “buy” your produce at THEIR price and sell it at the TRUE value while laundering a little cash at the same time. 20 years from now the land might be suitable for a dude ranch !!!

The current situation should NOT last more than 10 years but it could. Having a production potential is important. You can’t live there but SOMEONE can, well, maybe not. Give them a “free” place to stay and all the Papaya they can eat. Get a “partner”, spread the risk.

Real Estate Investments Ok, now that the postings have turned to real estate investments, I agree with the last posters, land investments will be great in about 5 years.
Right now people are buying undeveloped beachfront properties all the way between Cartagena and Santa Marta and neighboring areas and some developments are on the way.
Here´s some info that may surprise some people interested in investing in real estate in Colombia.
The latest high rise condominium properties in Cartagena start at 150K and climb all the way up to THREE MILLION DOLLARS. You can´t buy any of the old mansions in the walled city for less than a million dollars.
Most of the clients for these projects are europeans, rich colombians and americans with colombian wives/husbands who plan to retire or live a few months a year in Colombia.
