Finally! Love In The Time of Cholera here

Just saw it Friday night. Stunning photography...that scene with the mule caravan crossing the Magdalena is sheer beauty. What a disappointment with Fermina Daza, the Italian acress did a terrible job. John Leguizamo as one-dimensioned as always and the only the two best role interpretations belonging to Hector Elizondo y Catalina Sandino.

We enjoyed it, though. Lots of García Marquez lines direct from the book made the old-fashioned dialog worth listening.

Does anybody know what did Gabriel García Marquez think about the movie?

Desi I tried watching it. I would have loved to see the spanish version with English subtitles but the version I saw was the 'english' one...I couldn't deal with the accents, you can't have Gabo translated to English, it just sounds flowery and stupid.

I haven't see it yet, but I have heard so many bad reviews about it that I am not that interested in watching it.

I was quite disappointed with Maria full of Grace I didn't like it that much :( .

I enjoyed the movie, nicely done, but could have been better.

I was trying to see how they hid the chicken empanada outlet right beside where he wrote those love messages for the peasant couple. It was great to see all the familiar spots in old Centro.

One of the guys I work with was Locations Consultant on the film until the Mexican production office started up and put the whole project in the toilet.

It had fabulous potential, but in the end the whole thing was (in my opinion) a complete bore. Too bad, it would have been a perfect vehicle to put Colombia on the map for foreign productions. As it stands, Colombia is still a backwater that almost no one considers as a possible shooting location.

Some of the cinematography and locations were spectacular though...

desi ' Good to hear you were able to watch that movie! I liked it too. Have you seen "No Country for Old Men" yet? Javier Bardem is in this one too (reminds me of someone I know), along with Tommy Lee Jones.

ooops! ....Did I say that?

Mr. Hollywood says on May 4, 2008, 09:30:

Yikes! If Javier Bardem in "No Country" reminded me of someone I knew I'd be moving far, far away from where I am now.

Yep.....and that's about how it is , jajaja

In fact, if you want to know what it is like when a Socio Path bumps into you (in passing) - watch "Old Men".

Oh well, I saw a pirated copy of the film. I got tired of waiting for it come to the theaters here and I thought it never would, so I asked somebody to download it for me....totally unawares that they are playing it in the theaters all over Stockholm right now, the premier was on April 25.
I never go to the movies, I watch the DVD versions rather, my daughter has a home theater with large screen and we like to watch movies together and have a bite to eat.

I'll have to ask them to find that No Country For Old Men for me....

Desi - I think you'll like it. Both of the actors I mentioned in the film are very good at what they do. I think we will see more movies with Javier in the future. He's Good.

Desi: "Does anybody know what did Gabriel García Marquez think about the movie?"

Desideria, I also have seen the movie. I liked it very much. The mistake is expecting the movie to rise to the literary level of the novel. That can't happen.

I have seen Javier Bardem in four movies. He is an actor. He never plays Javier Bardem but is fully in character. He is destined to be a great actor if not already.

CatGirl says on May 5, 2008, 09:25:

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 5, 2008, 10:30:

Re Javier Bardem - I haven't looked at his profile on IMDB or similar sites but I think he's been around for a long time. Judging by all the Spanish-made movies I've seen him in, he's probably already considered a star in Spain/Europe.

Actually I was forced at gunpoint to ask my friends to do it. (They are Colombian, BTW) I felt very unhappy for it. I will never run for office.

Desi jejeje

Well, from past experience, this type of activity is "supposedly" socially acceptable in Colombia - Is this true?

This "mind set" was definitely a point of contention between my ex and I, as I come from the school
"Ain't no such thing as a free lunch"....where-as he came from the school "It is only good if you get it for free OR have someone else pay if it is too expensive"

A big conflict in value systems...but according to him - totally socially acceptable to take things you have not earned and take it with pride (hmmm). My rose colored glasses refused to believe that this was cultural...but maybe I am wrong

billyb says on May 5, 2008, 12:23:

Ok then Desi, I understand colombians can be a corrupting influnece and as long as you promise not to run ;)

el flaco says on May 6, 2008, 06:20:

Well my wife and i adored it. We saw it last sunday at a cinema, you can't beat the big screen.
We would have prefered it in spanish with subtitles, however I thought they did the accents well. Is there a spanish version or just a dubbed one?

Does anyone know how they filmed the riverboat, the star of the film? I assume they built a one sided full size mock up. The credits thanked the Colombian navy for their help!

Filmed in Colombia and London.

So I'm off to Bangladesh where I think the last commercial paddle steamer is as opposed to tourist ones.
