The street scene of Manaus looks a lot like the French quarter of New Orleans.

He who farts in church, sits in his own pew.

That Boom Box in the Manuas photo is a dead giveaway that it's Brasil-it must weight 20kg!

Love the boat shots and the Colombian border too.

My impressions spending less than a week in the Colombian stretch is that there would actually be much more to see by spending the time travelling up the tributaries of the Amazon, rather then several days on a slow boat from Manaus. The main river is big, and the landscape fairly uniform.

The river has been a marine/aquatic highway for a looong time and while the jungle is near, the reality of the Amazon (for me at least) was decidedly less romantic than the image I had prior to the trip. It is overfished, over hunted and over exploited.

Still it has such meaning and global significance that it is definitely worth visiting... I loved my trip and plan to go again someday so I can do a week or two going up the tributaries.

I would still love to see Manaus and Iquitos, but will probably fly or do a fast-boat.
