they play secret friend here..you buy chocolates or fruit or a small gift for your secret friend. I love holidays like this here. For example, I work as an english teacher in medellin and todays class was on the balcony dancing and drinking rum. Also bands just seem to pop up out of nowhere. Like at the exito in san antonio there was a small stage set up. Seems like there are a lot of parties. Sure is different than valentines day in the states.

El Dia del Amor y la Amistad en Colombia
En Colombia, el Dia del amor y la amistad, se celebra el tercer fin de semana de Septiembre. Sin embargo en la mayoria de paises, no es conocido como el Dia del amor y la amistad sino como el Dia de San Valentin o Dia de los Enamorados y se celebra el Dia 14 de febrero. Nosotros seguiremos llamandole Dia del Amor y la Amistad, pero vamos a comentarles porque se llama Dia de San Valentin:
Imaginense que durante el Imperio Romano, el Emperador Claudio II prohibio los matrimonios que dizque porque los soldados enamorados no daban el rendimiento deseado. Obviamente que una ley no puede prohibir ni el amor ni la amistad y la gente siguio enamorandose y acuDian a San Valentin para que los casara en secreto. San Valentin pudo hacer esto durante un tiempo pero el emperador se entero y lo hizo arrestar y ordeno su pena de muerte. San Valentin murio decapitado un 14 de febrero.
Desde 1969 se celebra el Dia de San Valentin o Dia del Amor y la Amistad (en Colombia). Como pueden no es que se celebre porque si, sino que su origen viene de toda un tragedia
