feeding the bugs HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sick of being a blood meal for the mosquitos and other blood sucking bugs here in Colombia. All my life I've alway s received more bites that the person next to me. Sangre Dulce I don't know. I take garlic daily and that doesn't seem to help at all. I don't like using sprays. Avon skin so soft works but is sooo expensive. Yesterday I must have gotten at least 10 bites.

I'm a bit alergic to the bites and sometimes I itch the bite to much and make a sore. I've alrerady had 3 bites today and it's only 8:30 am!

Any ideas for this munched on Gringo?

I am in the same situation.... use AC at night, trousers and long sleeves and avoid the time of the day when they bite more, take antiallergy and have a cortisone cream at hand (both cheap)... and you may move into a city like Medellin. Just make a search on the internet and you'll find out that taking garlic or B12 vitamin won't help at all!
Take care!

If it were me, and Avon worked- it wouldn't seem so expensive.

I think the mosquito problem is worse in some areas than other. i remember i stayed in Cuida jardin in south Cali and they were bad there, but i have also stayed in the north side of Cali and never once got bittin by a mosquito.

I agree with the RAID thing as mentioned by gringoinbogota. Not a nice smell, but if you leave windows and that open for ventilation which it recommends anyway then it helps.

There is a solution and it's natural and effective. There is a patch sold here that works like a charm.
You put it on your body and it stops those little suckers from biting you. They won't even land on you.
I used to be bitten all the time. Since I started wearing the patch, I haven't been bitten.

The patch lasts for 3 days and it's always been effective for me.

It's simply B1.

Try it - it works :)

Timefor, can you put some info on where to get that patch?

I use the natural mossy-guard with citronella - I hate using DEET-based formula sprays. I found that the Barranquilla mosquitos tended to bite me through my clothing though - the locals advised me not to wear dark clothing.

Does anyone know WHY mosquitoes prefer some people and not others?

CA, I have no idea why mosquitoes prefer some people over others. It has to be a taste / smell thing. I don't have problems at all. And when a mosquito bites me, I brush it off and there is nothing to show for it later. (but poison ivy ... I am F***ed) Why do you hate using deet? I have heard that it is truly the one thing that stops parasites from sucking on you.

The worst mosquitoes I have ever experienced were in Homestead, Florida. I heard the worst mosquitoes in the world are in the great white north during the summer months. Northern Canada, Alaska, etc.

Going along with what Kat1 said, I heard insects are repelled by citrus. The rubbing of lemons or limes on your exposed skin probably would slow the mosquitoes down a little.

I heard blood-type is a factor in how your body reacts to mosquito bites.

Caritadeangel,

There are a few people who sell them. I'm not sure which one is closest to you so I'll send a few links. These patches provide really good protection for around 36 hours.

I hope this helps.

Try getting roaringly drunk - apparently mozzies don't like it when alchohol seeps out of the poors of your skin. Whenever I have been stonkingly pissed the mosquitos haven't bitten me, either in the evening or when I am sleeping it off afterwards.

I have found the most amazing thing ever when it comes to bugs. I too get eaten alive while I am here in Medellin (and expecially when I goout to the fincas in the countryside.) Go to pretty much any pharmacy (Farmacia/Drogeria) and ask for Tiamina. Take one every single day and within two days or so the bugs will pretty much leave you alone. It's pretty cheap and seriously worth it. it's a vitamin that gives your body a scent that is undetectable to the human nose but the bugs can't stand it. I hope this helps

Robert Jorge says on Jun 28, 2007, 22:06:

Well, my body temp is consistently lower than the average body temp. And I am known to have a beer or two when out and about. I guess that explains why I don't get bothered by mosquitoes too much.
