Feedback on Places in Colombia/Anti-American?

Hi all, just wanted to post this before I head to Spain with my fiance for 6 weeks. I'm really excited for this since I finally get to see Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, a couple bullfights, and my first "El Correo de los Toros!!" Plus I love Spaniards (his Mom is from Madrid, his father from Ecuador) and can get my Spanish back up to par since I rarely practice it here.

We are planning a trip to Colombia for next year. We've read a few books and did some research as well as talked to a few people and pinpointed the places we wanted to visit. However, I'm still in search of some constructive feedback. Has anyone traveled to these places?

1. Ciudad Perdida
2. Tierradentro
3. San Agustin
4. Los Nevados

Of course we'll be spending some time in Cartagena and Cali as well. :-)

Also, and I absolutely hate to ask this, but how exactly do Colombians in general regard Americans? Surprisingly I received a warm open-arm welcome from the British and the Spaniards when I visited both England and Spain, and did not experience one iota of mistreatment. The Brits and Spaniards I spent time with even felt the anti-Americanism was, for the most part, childishly petulant and an excuse to be angry. However, these are just two countries in Europe I've been to, and I know that Americans are unpopular around the world and that American-bashing is still the "cool" thing to do. I'm not going to go the Canadian route to disguise where I am really from, I think that's just ridiculous. However, I'm just curious about whether I should be prepared for any backlash when my nationality is brought up in a social setting.

Thanks all!

No problem! I would venture a guess you will be better received in Colombia than any of the European countries. I have been to both areas and find the Colombian people to be warm and friendly.

Of course you will find individuals who only get their information about North Americans from El Tiempo. There are misperceptions there about the US just like there are in the United States about Colombia.

The only anti Americaisms I've heard from Colombians, was a week or so ago when we lost to the Czec Republic in the world cup. They were giving out a lot of papaya that day.

I don't think you have much to worry about.. remember, most Europeans don't dislike Americans, they do however strongly dislike our current President. This holds true in many countries in the Americas such as Venezuela also. Enjoy yourself.

I hang out in the worst areas of Barranquilla and I’ve never seen or heard any hatred towards Americans. Now if they catch your pasty white ass late at night by yourself, all you’ll have left is your crappy underwear, but the same thing will happen to a wealthy colombiano,
In my simple mind the reason most third world and most countries loves USA is because they are the mighty super power equal to none with absolutely no close second but yet they don’t act like it. Take a country like Argentina, a third world nation but according to them they are better or in the same league as USA. I know all argentines don’t think that way but most from Buenos Aires do. Put all those miniature car driving European countries together and you still can’t compete with USA. Damn I feel patriotic and I’m not even a freaking gringo I’m from some third world hell hole, but a fun third world hell hole. Thank god I’m not gringo because I’ll be screaming to the top of my lungs, we rule the freaking world and we are number one modefoques!!
I ask my kids, aren’t you young modefouqes extremely proud to say you’re from NYC? They look at me like I’m freaking nuts

That's because your kids are basically MY age and they missed it :P

at OP, no, I doubt anybody will give you grief, unless you start talking politics with them and you get into a disagreement, but who the hell wants to do that while on vacation anyways?

Nobody really hate gringos I mean... yeah you heard a lot of crap. But even Mr. George W. Bush, who happens to be the most hated gringo in the world, can come to Colombia and he will be welcome. Actually, everybody is welcome to Colombia: Gringo or Iraki, Black or White, Gay or Straight, Catholic or Muslim, rich or poor... isn't it great?
