How have you had them? And what type have you have. It is a bit of an aquired taste. Better taste than a slice of white bread. Arepas (regular) alone are a bit bland, with a slight taste of pop corn to them. For them I poke a few holes in them with a fork, throw them on a open flame in my stove to heat up and then apply some butter, margarine, jam, or any toping that seems good. On an arepa without holes I put a piece of cheese on it then top it with a fried egg and maybe a slice of ham. Yesterday, while in town, I had a yellow arepa with and egg inside it. Arepa de Choco is real good when fried a bit with some butter. It goes on and on.

My favorite arepa is the arepa boyacense, also known as arepa campesina in Bogotá. In Suba there are several places that make and sell it, but my mother-in-law knows a lady who makes them back in Boyacá in a stone oven and brings them all the way to Bogotá daily.

Also the arepa made from peto with cheese inside is really good, not sure about its name. They make and sell it on the main square of Rionegro right across from the church, those arepas actually have more cheese then peto in them!

I heard arepa santandereana is also really good, but no idea what it's like.

Favorite food: fritanga of any kind, especially chicharrón, morcilla/rellena, ternera, chigüiro, chunchullo, chanfaina, chorizo, longaniza, yuca. Everything starting with "ch" and meant to kill you by heart attack.
Absolute worst: mango biche, eeeewwwww!!!

oh tamales are nice, I gave to my gringo fiance to try arepas to see if he could be an Arepalcoholic, but thanks god he hates it! as me, so I don´t need to worry about dinners with arepa.

arepa santanderana taste like charcoal, the peto arepa no way even if the proportion of cheese is 5 -1

i´m not big fan of the CH food but I have to admit I like it, youre right Gato about the heart attac! I will wait until I get 40 to start realizing about CH healt issues

SOBREBARRIGA. That's a great piece of beef when it's well prepared. It has to be marinated the day before with spices and beer, cooked and then placed in the oven, then you melt some cheese on top and you'll end up with a meat cut that will compete with RIBEYE and KOBE BEEF. But it has to be thick. HMMMMM. and if you are able to use some CAVIAR BOYACENSE as an appetizer, that's even ever. By the way caviar Boyacense is morcilla, LOL.

As far as dislikes....my cousin also prepared cow tongue for me and did not tell me what it was. I thought it was great! I did think it was a bit unusual in the texture but didn't think anything of it. I didn't find out until the next day what I had eaten. It was good, but I don't think I could have eaten it knowing what it was!

hum. . . that depends on the arepas. The white one, made in carulla (one of the largest food chains here in colombia). Taste like cardboard. I´ll give you that.

But there are many ways to make arepas. . . as for example, sweet ones like choclo. (Yellow ones. .. a little bit crispy with cheese) or made from corn (From boyacá) like the thickest one you can buy for less than a dollar (1.000 pesos= 0.75 usdollars more or less) in any road to boyaca. Usually home made, and if youre from other country, maybe they can serve you with "chicha". (A alcoholic beverage sweet made from corn too.)

Mango biche is pieces of green mango with salt. Tastes horrible, but my wife loves it.

Lengua, platano frito, buñuelo, almojabana, pandebono, pandeyuca, pandequeso are all great though. And by chicharrón I of course meant chicharrón carnudo, because eating just the skin is no fun.

I was told in Ukraine they make an equivalent of morcilla but with buckwheat instead of rice. I thought I need to try that when I get a chance.

When I first tried mondongo, I didn't know what I was eating. It was good enough that when I figured out what it was, it didn't matter. I ended up living off of it. I make it here (US), but it takes such a long time to prepare, it is a rarity and for special occasions. In Colombia, it was one of my staples. That bowl of soup is the typical size. (huge) I paid 3 mil for a bowl of mondongo. 2.5 mil for menudencias ... another one of my favorites. My favorite meal is probably the carne de llano at one of the roadside pavilion type restaraunts on the edge of Villavo, near the 7th Brigade.

That's it, I have to move back.

Bazucojoe, mazamorra is made up of corn or corn kernels. As you know all grains are healthy food like wheat, cocoa puff, rice and others.
When you cook and eat mazamorra you are eating healthy food and Colombians like to add bits of panela to mazamorra instead of sugar. I believe it tastes better and it's healthier.
Next time you dare to try mazamorra, do not buy it from the street vendors but ask a Colombian expert to cook a large cup if you do not want to try the whole bowl of mazamorra. Remember all you eating is cooked corn, milk and panela. Yummy que rico and healthy!

I almost like every food from Colombia except from morcillas because they are made up of blood and I am not a vampire, besides all the diseases that an animal has or could have are found in the blood.

Rubito so you won't eat lentejas, frijoles, blanquillos etc? They have alot of nutritional value and reduce cholesterol.

Billy the kind of buñuelos I know are deep-fried, not hot out of the oven:)
Delicious, especially the spotted variety I make.

Mona, I ate huge amounts of champus during both of my pregnancies in Cali; the Black Lady with the huge tin kettle on Avenida Guadalupe under the humongous old ceiba became my best friend. She and the Chontaduro Lady in front of the Iglesia San Fernando...those were the days...when I could eat all that stuff as much as I wanted. (Life sucks. Never get old)

Cheers,
Desi

Desi, yes you are correct, I meant to say the pandebonos out of the oven. I am salivating over the buñuelos in your pic though. What gives them the spots?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Sep 6, 2007, 13:04:

hahahahaha kat, I've been trying to remove that pic for the last hour or so because it's too big and the whole page shifts awkwardlyto the left, but I haven't been able to. It just keeps coming back even after I delete it.

Cheers,
Desi

Desiiiii como me haces esto!
It's 21.09 over here and I can't eat a thing, that pic is making me sooooo hungry!
I would kill for one of those and a really cold manzana postobon or colombiana.

Yeah so what gives them the spots?

Ahhh, Mona, buñuelos and a manzana postobon, that i could really go for right now. I think my brother's favorite part of going back to Colombia is to eat buñuelos.

Billy I know, I admire Desi so much, her husband must be a happy man ;-) I would even be willing to spoil the hour long walk I did today for a couple of those beauties jaja

I learned to do empanada's and the more common dishes like Sancocho, sopas and frijoles etc but I have not done buñuelos or pan de bono's yet but I think that will be on the menu this sunday, ya me antoje!

There' a Colombian place in SF where you can get buñuelos, but they're so-so, but they do have great empanadas. I go down there and load up on those beauties and a litro of manzana. Damn and i'm still at work.

Jaja you'll have to wait till later then ;-)
They do them here at a carniceria and they are ok, as long as you get them hot and the pandebono's too, but I prefer buñuelos, we have the same taste bueñuelo manzana ;-)

Rubito,...
Thanks for posting those two urls, especially the second.
I've been wondering about your PALEOLITHIC diet.
That's SERIOUS RATIONAL that goes against so much of what is being promoted in health/science/diet these days.
